Cajuns Fall in Hard-Fought Match With Warhawks

9/25/2015 10:05:00 PM | Volleyball

LAFAYETTE – In a match that featured an even amount of kills and digs, plus nearly identical hitting percentages, ULM slipped by the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-25, 15-13) Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.

Louisiana (3-11, 0-3 Sun Belt) and ULM (10-5, 2-0 Sun Belt) each posted 59 kills and each recorded 78 digs. The Warhawks held a slight .231-.223 advantage in hitting percentage.

ULM avoided a 2-0 deficit in the match by staving off a late Louisiana rally in the second set. The Cajuns forged a 24-all tie, then the Warhawks used a kill from Taylor Zaeske and forced Keely Hayes to hit into an attack error to capture the set and even the match.

In the fifth set, the Cajuns pushed the Warhawks to the brink after kills from Chanelle Gardner and Nia Antoine, followed by a Gardner ace, cut the ULM lead to 14-13. Hadley Swartz, with a well-placed ball, slipped a kill past Gardner in the back row to claim match point for ULM.

Friday's match was the lone contest for Louisiana this weekend. The Ragin' Cajuns travel to Hammond, La., on Tuesday, Sept. 29 to face Southeastern Louisiana in a non-conference match, then return to Earl K. Long Gym for Sun Belt matches with Arkansas State on Friday, Oct. 2 and Appalachian State on Saturday, Oct. 3

Gardner led all players with a career-high 20 kills and accomplished the feat using a sparkling .548 hitting percentage (20 K, 3 E, 31 TA). The St. Martinville product's previous career-best kills total was 17 set twice in 2014, last vs. Georgia State on Oct. 24.

Sara Mossakowski (11 kills, 13 digs) and Jessica Bartczyszyn (50 assists, 11 digs) notched double-doubles for the Ragin' Cajuns. Libero Sydney Davis' match-high 24 digs marked a personal season-and career-high.

Zaeske led ULM with 19 kills on 48 swings. Hope Pawlik and Swartz joined her in double digits with 12 kills apiece. Libero Tara Jenkins notched a team-high 19 digs.

Key to the Warhawks win was tallying 20 kills and hitting .528 (20 K, 1 E, 36 TA) in posting a 25-19 win in the third set to grab a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Cajuns flipped the script in the fourth set to even the match and force a deciding fifth frame. Louisiana's hitting percentage was above .400 throughout the majority of the set and as a result raced out to an 18-9 lead, eventually landing a 25-15 win.

ULM snapped a six-match losing streak to Louisiana. With the loss, the Ragin' Cajuns saw their losing streak stretched to six matches.
