LAFAYETTE -- Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis freshman Arthur Libaud defeated sophomore Spencer Papa of Oklahoma to take the Cajun Tennis Classic Singles Consolation championship Sunday morning.
Libaud, a native of Beaumont, France responded with three-straight wins in the singles back draw after falling in the first round of the Round of 32 Singles to Georgia's Paul Ooosterbaan. Libaud's path to the back draw championship saw him defeat opponents from TCU, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma (twice).
"I think for someone, as a freshman, Libaud performed brilliantly this weekend," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "For him to come in and win the consolation, it was impressive. He lost the singles to Oosterbaan (Georgia), but he came back and won a couple of tough matchups in the back draw."
The opening weekend of the 2015 fall season revealed a number of positives that Jeffrey can take and build on as his team moves ahead towards the next phase of their schedule.
"Arthur and Will [Huyton] performed very well in doubles," he said. "The tournament was much stronger this year with four top 10 teams as opposed to just two top 10 teams last year. [Coleman] Wahlborg and [Edgar] Lopez also had a good result against Georgia earlier in the weekend. We had some guys perform really well and we have areas that we can improve on moving forward."
The Cajuns will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma next Saturday, October 3-11 for the All-American Championships.
