LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team opens the home portion of its 2015 schedule Friday-Saturday, Sept. 4-5 hosting the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin' Cajuns will be joined by Houston, Jackson State and Nicholls State for the two-day event.
Louisiana (0-4) begins tournament play on Friday against Jackson State (0-4) in match scheduled for 7 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns meet Nicholls State (2-1) on Saturday at 12 p.m., then wrap up the tournament with a rematch against Houston (2-1) in a 4 p.m. contest.
Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot's squad is playing their first matches at Long Gym after starting the 2015 season with four road matches. The Ragin' Cajuns are opening a four-match homestand which concludes Tuesday, Sept. 8 against Southern.
Louisiana is competing in its second pre-conference tournament. Last weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns participated in the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
In search of their first victory of the season, the Ragin Cajuns had a near miss on Tuesday at Northwestern State. The Demons rallied with wins in the final two sets to claim the five-set battle.
Junior Chanelle Gardner has paced the Cajuns' offense, reaching at least five sets in all four matches. The St. Martinville native is averaging a team-best 2.0 kills per set and sports a team-best .216 season hitting percentage.
Redshirt sophomore Jessica Bartczyszyn makes her home debut as starting setter. She's averaged 7.07 assists per set through the first four outings. Two years ago, Bartczyszyn earned MVP honors of the Sawyer Camillo Classic.
Freshman Sydney Davis, who has started at libero three of the season's four matches, leads the Cajuns with 3.14 digs per set. Lafayette High product McKenzie John is a close second averaging 2.79 digs per set.
Louisiana began the season shorthanded as expected starters Sara Mossakowski (outside hitter), Stacey Reilly (outside hitter) and Danni Duck (defensive specialist/libero) have all missed time while recovering form injury. Mossakowski saw her first action of the season on Tuesday at Northwestern State, subbing in and playing a series of eight rallies in the second set.
