Cruz Valle Opens Latin America Amateur Championship With Strong Showing

CASA DE CAMPO, Dominican Republic – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns junior golfer Fernando Cruz Valle carded an opening round score of even par (72) on Thursday to finish in a tie for 13th at the Latin America Amateur Championship hosted at the Teeth of the Dog Golf Course.

Cruz Valle, representing his native country of Mexico, had only two blemishes in the first round while tallying three birdies. The junior sits four strokes back of Alvaro Ortiz, Mexico, and Jose Andres Miranda, Ecuador, for the tournament lead.

The field will be cut to the leading 50 players plus ties after 36 holes. 107 golfers are taking part in this year's event.

Invitations for the championship are sent to the leading players from the 29 IOC-recognized countries and territories from this region that are current members of the International Golf Federation. Each country is automatically provided with two positions, which are to be filled by their best-ranked players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). The remainder of the field is filled by taking the next best-ranked players from WAGR.

Fans can watch each of the final three rounds of the Latin America Amateur Championship live on ESPN2 and the WatchESPN app. The broadcast begins at 1 p.m. CST on Friday, 11 a.m. CST on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. CST on Sunday.

The winner of the event receives an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, an exemption into The Amateur Championship, conducted by The R&A, and an exemption into the U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible.

Additionally, the winner and the runner(s)-up receive an exemption into Open Qualifying Series – Final Qualifying, held in July in the United Kingdom, with an opportunity to earn a place in The Open Championship 2016 at Royal Troon, and an exemption into final stage qualifying for the U.S. Open with an opportunity to earn a place in the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

The Cajuns open the 2016 spring slate on Feb. 8-9 at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, while the 31st annual Louisiana Classics is set for Feb. 29 – March 1 at Oakbourne Country Club.
