Cajuns Begin Homestand Against South Alabama Thursday

LAFAYETTE –The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team (12-3, 5-1 SBC) go for their 11th win in their last 13 games overall when they return home to play South Alabama at the Cajundome this Thursday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.

Thursday's game will be filled with plenty of promotions. A Cane's Challenge FOWL Shot will take place if the opposing team misses both free throws in the fourth quarter of the women's game. Thursday night's game is also McDonald's Family Fun Pack Night, which includes four tickets, and four extra value meals for $20.Â

Fourth-year head coach Garry Brodhead passed Ross Cook for sole possession of second place for most wins in program history with 58 in the Cajuns' 56-39 win at Georgia Southern on Jan. 14. Brodhead trails only J. Kelley Hall (86 wins) on the Cajuns all-time coaching ledger.
The Cajuns have won five road games this season (5-3 record), following last Saturday's 77-57 win at Georgia State. The most road wins they have recorded in a single season under Coach Brodhead is seven, accomplished during the 2014-15 campaign (7-6).Â
Through six conference games this season, Louisiana's defense is holding opponents to just 56.7 points per contest, the second-lowest total among Sun Belt Conference schools (Little Rock - 54.2).Â
Senior guard Kia Wilridge handed out four assists in the 77-57 win at Georgia State this past Saturday, raising her career total to 264. The 264 assists placed her into sixth place on the Cajuns' all-time list. (Alicia McDaniel – 261).
Junior guard Jaylyn Gordon scored a team-high 24 points against Georgia State. She also splashed four three-pointers, which gave her 144 for her career, passing Onna Charles for sixth on UL's all-time list.
Coach Brodhead at the Helm: Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead is in his fourth season at the helm of the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program, finishing with 23 wins last season, the most in a single season since 2006-07 (25). Brodhead guided the team to 15 victories at home in 2014-15, a program record. He passed Ross Cook (57) to move into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time wins list with 58 on January 14. Brodhead trails only J. Kelley Hall (86) for the most wins by a coach in Ragin' Cajuns history.Â

Cajuns In the Rankings: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team mproved their standing in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Basketball Mid-Major poll this week, moving up two spots to No. 22. Louisiana is in the mid-major poll for the seventh straight week and garnered 92 points in this week's rankings.

Gordon Recognized by College Sports Madness: This week, junior guard Jaylyn Gordon was named College Sports Madness Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. In two games last week, she averaged a team-high 19.5 points to go with 5.5 rebounds. The Edgard, La., native dished out a team-high 10 assists and added a team-best four steals on the defensive end of the floor. She shot 41.7% (15-of-36) from the floor. It is the second time this season she has won the weekly honor.Â

Road trip Numbers: During the Cajuns' four-game roadtrip in which they went 3-1, their top three leading scorers this season paced the offense, accounting for 47.3 (74.4% of the scoring) points per contest. Keke Veal led all scorers, averaging 17.8 points in four game, followed by Jaylyn Gordon at 15.5 points per game and Kia Wilridge at 14.0 points.Â

First Half Success: The Cajuns have gone into halftime leading in 11 of the 15 games they've played this season. They have won all 11 games in which they held a lead at the intermission.Â

Cooper's Block Party: Louisiana freshman center Breionne Cooper owns a team-high 10 blocked shots this season. The 10 blocks are the most for a Cajun in a single season since 2012-13 (Keke Veal, Jasmin Mills, Robbie Brown each had 10 that season).Â

Veal Continues Points Chase: Cajuns senior guard Keke Veal brings 1,293 career points into the South Alabama game this Saturday. She is 65 points away from tying Teena Cooper (1,358) for third place in the Cajuns record books.Â

Wilridge Assist Watch: Senior guard Kia Wilridge stands at 260 career assists heading into Saturday's game at Georgia State. She stands 16 assists shy of tying Cindy Vincent (260) for fifth in Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns history.Â

Gordon 3-Point Watch: Junior guard Jaylyn Gordon enters Thursday's game with 144 career three-point field goals made, currently sixth-most in Cajuns history. She needs seven more treys to pass current teammate Sylvana Okde (150) for fifth place in UL history.Â

Defense, Defense, Defense: In 15 overall regular season games, the Cajuns defense is holding opponents to a conference-low 55.5 points per game. In their six conference games, they are limiting the opposition to a conference-low 56.7 points per contest.Â
