Veteran strength coach joins Cajuns after stints at UNT, Michigan, Mississippi State

LAFAYETTE – Lewis Caralla, who spent the past season as Director of Strength and Conditioning at North Texas and had stints at Michigan, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech, was named as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in an announcement on Thursday by Director of Athletics Scott Farmer.

The hiring of Caralla is subject to approval by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors.

"We are very fortunate to have someone like Lewis join our staff," Farmer said. "He comes to our athletic department very highly recommended and has a broad base in working with numerous teams. We are excited to have him join the Ragin' Cajuns family and we look forward to him working with all of our student-athletes and teams."

Caralla, a native of Tarpon Springs, Fla., will oversee the strength and conditioning progress of the Ragin' Cajuns 16 Division I programs that recently moved into a state-of-the-art 12,000-square foot weight room that is part of the Student-Athlete Performance Center.

"I feel honored and lucky to be a part of such a great program," Caralla said. "The facility, the people and the student-athletes are all incredible and I can't wait to build on the excellent tradition that all of our athletic programs have set here at UL."

Before his arrival at Louisiana, Caralla spent one year at UNT where he directed a comprehensive training program for the Mean Green football team in 2015.

Caralla spent three seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan. While in Ann Arbor, Caralla served as the director of the Wolverines' annual Strength and Conditioning Clinic – the largest in the country.

He joined the Michigan football program after serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for football at Mississippi State (2011) and Georgia Tech (2010-11). In addition to assisting with the football program at Georgia Tech, Caralla also served as the head strength and conditioning coach for men's golf.

Before working with Georgia Tech, Caralla was a graduate assistant strength coach at Mississippi State (2009-10), where he assisted with football, the men's and women's tennis, and basketball teams.

Caralla's experience also includes stops as an intern at Virginia (2008) and South Florida (2007). Caralla earned his bachelor's degree in wellness and corporate fitness from Defiance (Ohio) College in 2008, where he was a two-time all-conference selection at running back. He also was a two-time academic all-conference choice.

Caralla received his master's degree in kinesiology from Mississippi State in 2010. He is certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC), the United States Weightlifting Federation and the American Red Cross Association.
