10/14/2016 9:26:00 PM | Volleyball
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball had its two-match win streak snapped on Friday as Arkansas State piled up at least 17 kills in each set on the way to a straight sets sweep (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) at Earl K. Long Gym.
Louisiana (7-14, 3-3 Sun Belt) was dealt its first loss on the current four-match homestand which concludes Sunday at Noon vs. Little Rock.
The Red Wolves (14-7, 6-1 Sun Belt) finished with a 55-32 advantage in kills and recorded a .371 match hitting percentage. In similar fashion to the win in Jonesboro two weeks ago, the reigning Sun Belt champions hit above .300 in each set.
Stacey Reilly led the Ragin' Cajuns attack with nine kills. She was supported by Chloe Cordell with eight kills and six apiece from Chynna Brooks and Chanelle Gardner.
Louisiana's Sydney Davis claimed match-high honors with 16 digs. Davis scooped double figures in SBC play for the sixth time in as many matches.
Jessica Bartczyszyn posted a double-double for the second straight match, adding 10 digs to her 24 assists.
The first set hung in the balance throughout the entirety of the frame. The Ragin' Cajuns never let the Red Wolves surge any higher than a five-point lead. Louisiana would cut the ASU lead to 23-22 after three straight kills, giving the hosts an opportunity for the early lead in the match.
The Red Wolves would grab the 1-0 lead after Brentlee Weaver kill and a Ragin' Cajuns attack error gave the visitors a 25-22 win.
The Ragin' Cajuns raced out to a 5-2 lead in the second set behind two kills apiece from Brooks and Cordell. The Red Wolves rallied back, building up a .514 hitting percentage in claiming the set.
ASU opened the third set with back-to-back kills from Carlisa May and never relinquished the lead in completing the sweep. Louisiana fell behind 9-3, but battled back to get within three points three times: once on a kill by Gardner (11-8) and two more times (13-10 and 14-11) on blocks thrown up by Brooks, Cordell and Dree'Ana Abram.
May paced the Red Wolves with 17 kills on a .389 hitting percentage. Jessica Uke had 11 kills on 15 well-place attack attempts. Libero Markie Schaedig taillied a team-high 14 digs and setter Mallory Warrington handed out 47 assists.
