Little Rock Escapes With Five-Set Win over Louisiana

10/16/2016 3:53:00 PM | Volleyball

LAFAYETTE – Little Rock erased a 2-0 match deficit to grab a five-set (16-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17, 17-15) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Trojans' offense heated up in the third and fourth sets, compiling 28 kills on a .316 percentage, to draw even. In the fifth set, the visitors recorded three key blocks on a 5-1 run that erased a 14-10 deficit, then after the 15-all tie won the match with back-to-back kills.

The finish to Sunday's match was a role reversal of the last meeting between the two teams in Little Rock back on Sept. 30, when the Ragin' Cajuns erased a 14-11 deficit to win the fifth set 17-15.

Prior to Little Rock's late charge, Louisiana (7-15, 3-4 Sun Belt) utilized a pair of kills from Chloe Cordell and an ace from McKenzie John to open the 14-10 lead and place the visiting Trojans (8-13, 4-4 Sun Belt) on a tight rope.

Cordell led the Ragin' Cajuns offense with 14 kills. Also in double figures were Chanelle Gardner and Nia Antoine with 13 each and Stacey Reilly with 11.

Gardner's production increased her career kills total to 936 allowing her to pass Elizabeth Inman into second place on the rally scoring era career chart. The St. Martinville HS product is now 18 kills shy from moving past Lesley Mirarchi as the rally scoring era leader.

Libero Sydney Davis collected a match-high 27 digs to pace the Ragin' Cajuns who out-dug the Trojans 91-82. John added 17 digs, Reilly had 16 and Jessica Bartczyszyn reached double figures for the third straight match with 10.

Little Rock held a .275-.208 advantage in hitting percentage and out-blocked Louisiana 12-5. Edina Selimovic contributed 16 kills and five blocks to lead the Trojans' efforts. Marina Avram posted a double-double of 15 kills and 19 digs.

The Ragin' Cajuns took control of the opening set with a 10-0 run off the serve of Antoine which opened a 12-5 advantage. After the Trojans broke serve Louisiana rattled off seven more unanswered points, the first two off kills by Gardner and Dree'Ana Abram and the last two on aces from Bartczyszyn, to open a 19-6 edge and leave little doubt in the outcome.

A kill by Reilly put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 18-17 in the second set, completing the comeback from an early five-point deficit. After The Trojans forged a 20-all tie, Bartczyszyn used a dump kill to give Louisiana the lead for good and a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was Little Rock that dug out of a hole in the third set, erasing a 15-10 deficit with a 6-1 run to draw even. Tied once more at 22-all, the visitors gained the upper-hand with kills from Miona Milovanovic and Selimovic on consecutive rallies and won 25-23 to stay alive in the match.

Louisiana completed its four-match homestand with a 2-2 mark. With the win, Little Rock jumped ahead of the Ragin' Cajuns in the Sun Belt West standings.

Louisiana and Little Rock split their Sun Belt season series, with the road team winning both contests. The Ragin' Cajuns were denied a chance at the season sweep of the Trojans for the third time in the past six seasons.

The Ragin' Cajuns had won their previous two matches that went to five sets, a streak which began with the five-set win in Little Rock.

Louisiana finishes the month of October on the road with a four-match trip that begins on the East Coast next week at Coastal Carolina (Oct. 21) and Appalachian State (Oct. 23).
