Cajuns to face West Florida in exhibition game on Nov. 3 at Blackham

LAFAYETTE – Transfer Malik Marquetti scored a go-ahead bucket with 52 seconds remaining and added a pair of insurance free throws to help the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Red team to a 93-89 win over the White team in the Red-White Scrimmage on Thursday at Blackham Coliseum.

Freshman Justin Miller scored 20 points to help lead the Red team with a pair of transfers for the 2017-18 season – South Carolina's Marcus Stroman and Mizzou transfer JaKeenan Gant scoring 20 and 19 points respectively. The former SEC tandem each grabbed 10 rebounds for the White team , with Stroman dishing out five assists with Gant blocking four shots.

Marquetti, a transfer from USC who will also sit out the 2016-17 season with Stroman and Gant, added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Red team, which led for nearly the entire game before the White team took an 86-85 lead on a layup by Jay Wright with 3:03 left.

"(It was) a good dress rehearsal, I saw a lot of things that I liked and some things that I didn't, but some guys helped themselves tonight," head coach Bob Marlin said. "I liked the way that we shared the ball and played together. I liked the competitiveness of the game. We scrimmaged yesterday (Wednesday) for about a half and the White team beat the Red team by 29, and then they (Red) turned around today and came back and got them."

Freshman P.J. Hardy began a 6-0 run for the Red team with a layup before a bucket by Stroman and two free throws by Gant pushed the lead to 8-2. Miller, who finished 9-for-15 from the floor, gave the Red team a 22-12 lead on a three-point play before Gant later drained a 3-pointer for a 39-27 lead with 7:59 remaining.

Freshman Roydell Brown gave the Red team its biggest lead of the game – 76-63 – with a layup with 10:54 remaining before the White team chipped away at the lead. Wright converted on a layup that started an 8-0 run for the White team, eventually cutting the deficit to 83-80 on two free throws by Frank Bartley.

Wright, who scored 15 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, gave the White team an 86-85 lead – its first lead since the opening minute – when he scored on a layup with 3:03 left before each side made a pair of free throws down the stretch.

Marquetti's bucket in the final minute gave the Red team the lead for good (90-89) before Stroman and Marquetti made three free throws in the final 25 seconds to preserve the win.

Bartley, a Baton Rouge native and BYU transfer, scored 26 points to lead all scorers while Bryce Washington posted a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Johnathan Stove added 14 points for the White team, which scored 60 points in the paint and scored 24 points of 23 Red turnovers.

Brown added 15 points and seven rebounds for the White team, which finished 36-for-72 from the floor and held a 48-43 advantage on the boards.

Louisiana will host West Florida in an exhibition game on Thursday (Nov. 3) at 7 p.m. at Blackham Coliseum before officially opening the season on Nov. 11 at Minnesota.
