Mavericks Take Round One From the Ragin' Cajuns

10/29/2016 9:34:00 PM | Volleyball

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington claimed the season's first matchup with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team by posting a straight sets sweep (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) win on Saturday at the College Park Center.

The Mavericks (13-14, 7-5 Sun Belt) hit above .200 in each set which allowed the hosts to erase an early deficit each time. The Ragin' Cajuns (8-18, 4-7 Sun Belt) did hit above .130 each frame and averaged nearly 12 kills per set, but a combined 33 errors (20 attack errors, seven service errors, six reception errors) proved costly.

The two teams will meet again on Friday, Nov. 11 at Earl K. Long Gym.

Louisiana, which completed a four-match road trip, returns to Earl K. Long Gym next weekend for a pair of matches that are part of UL Lafayette's Homecoming. The Ragin' Cajuns host Troy on Friday at 6:30 p.m., then welcome South Alabama for a 12:30 p.m. match on Sunday.

UT Arlington finished with a slight edge in kills (38-35), assists (36-32) and digs (48-45). Both teams served up six aces.

Stacey Reilly led the Ragin' Cajuns offense with 11 kills on a .310 hitting percentage. Reilly, who reached double digits for the 20th time this season, finished tied with the Mavericks' Qiana Canete for match-high honors.

Jessica Bartczyszyn had a hand in 29 of Louisiana's 32 assists. Libero Sydney Davis accrued a match-high 17 digs.

The Mavericks were able to neutralize reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Nia Antoine who was held to two kills, snapping a string of consecutive matches with double digit kills at four.

An ace from Hannah Henry on the match's first rally got the Ragin' Cajuns going in the first set. A 4-0 run, which featured kills from Reilly and Katherine Young, staked the Ragin' Cajuns to a 7-4 lead.

Louisiana remained in front – leading by as many as four points at 12-8 following a kill by Antoine – until the Mavericks drew even at 12-all. The Ragin' Cajuns rebuilt a lead at 16-14, but UT Arlington's final rally was three consecutive kills for a 17-16 edge and the hosts played from ahead the remainder of the first set.

The Ragin' Cajuns jumped in front 6-3 in the second set, getting two kills apiece from Dree'Ana Abram and Chanelle Gardner. A 4-0 run from the Mavericks swung the momentum to their side. The frame hung in the balance after a kill by Chloe Cordell cut Louisiana's deficit to 17-16, but a service error gave UT Arlington a sideout and then the hosts rattled off six unanswered points.

The Mavericks completed the sweep thanks in part to an efficient .265 attack effort in the third set that was key to building up a 15-9 advantage that the Ragin' Cajuns were unable to overcome. UT Arlington had to hold off a late Louisiana rally, though, capped off by three consecutive kills from Cordell which sliced the lead to 24-21.
