LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team opened practice on Monday in preparation for the 2016-17 season.
Â
Louisiana returns seven letterwinners, including junior forward Simone Fields, who played in 34 games last season and averaged 9.2 points per game.
Â
Also returning is senior point guard Jaylyn Gordon, who played in 17 games last season and averaged 14.9 points per game. Senior guard Sylvana Okde returns healthy after sitting out part of last season with an injury.
Â
"The seniors are great examples for the younger kids because of their knowledge and what they know from being here for three years and the experience they have," head coach Garry Brodhead said. "We are going to be relying on them to help us improve in all aspects of the game."
Â
Senior guard Gabby Alexander, senior guard Taylor Washington, junior guard Jodi Quinn, and sophomore center Breionne Cooper all return for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Â
Louisiana welcomes six newcomers to the team. A group that is highlighted by junior transfer Troi Swain, who played last season for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.
Â
Sixteen home games, featuring non-conference contests against Louisiana Tech and Houston, are part of a challenging slate released by head coach Garry Brodhead that includes a Nov. 22 contest against nationally ranked Notre Dame in Houston.
Â
Louisiana, which tied a school-record with 25 wins last season, opens play at home with an exhibition game at Blackham Coliseum against LSU-Alexandria (Nov. 7) before traveling to play the regular season opener at McNeese (Nov. 12).
Â
"It will be great to go back to McNeese and have that opportunity to play in front of their crowd," Brodhead said.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns host Dillard (La.) in an exhibition game (Nov. 19) at Blackham Coliseum before playing Notre Dame (Nov. 22) at the Campbell Center in suburban Aldine, Texas.

Season tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Box Office at (337) 265-2357 or visiting RaginCajuns.com/Tickets.
