Soccer Prepares For Sun Belt Tournament

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team begins Sun Belt Conference tournament play on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when it takes on Appalachian State at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Live statistics will be available on RaginCajuns.com and all matches will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.

Fifth-seeded Louisiana (8-8-2, 4-4-2 SBC), which is 1-2 all-time against fourth-seeded Appalachian State (9-7-2, 4-4-2 SBC), fell to the Mountaineers, 2-0, in Boone, N.C. on Oct. 21.

"Everybody is 0-0 right now," head coach Scot Wieland said. "We will roll out the ball on Wednesday and get after it."

The winner of Wednesday's match between the Ragin' Cajuns and the Mountaineers will face the winner of No. 1 South Alabama vs. No. 8 Troy in a semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. (CDT).

The championship match will be on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. (CDT).

"I think the girls are pretty excited," Wieland said. "I think we have a great chance of doing really well."

Junior defender Ashleigh Cade leads the Sun Belt Conference and is currently tied for third in the nation in total assists (11).

Senior forward Mackenzie Higgins has scored eight goals on the season – tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference – while senior midfielder Yazmin Montoya has scored five goals.

Senior Natalie Newman, senior Annika Schmidt and junior Whitney Taggart have scored four goals each. Senior Carly Ellender and junior Haley Boroch have scored three goals each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cosette Morché has recorded 83 saves on the season (third in the Sun Belt Conference) while ranking third in the league in saves per match (5.93).
