Mobile, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team earned a 3-2 win over Sun Belt Conference leader South Alabama on Sunday afternoon at The Cage.
Louisiana (7-7-1, 3-3-1 SBC) took a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute on a goal by junior Whitney Taggart, her fourth of the season. Junior Ashleigh Cade was credited with her nation leading tenth assist of the season.
South Alabama (9-4-1, 4-2 SBC) answered with a goal in the 84th minute from Jemma Purfield on a deep free kick from the right side.
The Cajuns had key saves from sophomore goalkeeper Cosette Morché in the final minutes to preserve the win. Morché had eight saves in the match.
"I'm just really proud of them because it was just such a great total team effort on the road against a very good team," head coach Scot Wieland said.
South Alabama took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on a goal by Monique Autmon off an assist from Ashlynn Jones.
Louisiana scored in the 43rd minute on a goal by junior Haley Boroch off an assist from a corner kick by Yazmin Montoya.
"We earned a corner kick and it's just a matter of people doing their jobs," Wieland said. "Yazmin served in a beautiful ball and Haley did her job."
Louisiana took a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute on a goal by Montoya from 30 yards out off an assist from freshman Celine Rumpf. It was Montoya's fifth goal of the season.
Taggart's goal in the 70th minute gave the Ragin' Cajuns a two goal lead.
"Going up 3-1 on the road is massive rather than 2-1," Wieland said. "One goal leads in soccer are not that much. Having that third goal was huge."
Louisiana will face Louisiana Monroe on Sunday, Oct. 16 in a 1 p.m. match at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
