Cajuns Overcome Three-Point Barrage By Delaware State

Washington records third double-double of the season; Cajuns head to JMU on Wednesday

LAFAYETTE – Frank Bartley scored a game-high 25 points while Bryce Washington recorded his third double-double of the season with 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team withstood a three-point barrage by Delaware State and held on for an 83-82 victory on Monday at Blackham Coliseum.
 
Freshman P.J. Hardy scored a season-high 12 points off the bench while Jay Wright added 10 points as Louisiana (2-2) used a 15-6 run over the final 4:43 of the first half to overcome a 30-27 deficit and build a 42-36 lead at halftime.
 
Delaware State (1-3), which finished 13-for-25 (52.0 percent) from behind the 3-point line, stormed out to an 8-0 lead as DeVaughn Mallory scored on a bucket in the lane before DeAndre Haywood drained back-to-back 3-pointers.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns trailed 10-3 with 17:00 remaining in the first half before scoring 10 of the next 13 points to tie the game with 13:33 remaining. Washington and Scott Plaisance each scored buckets off missed shots for Louisiana during the stretch with Bartley and Wright each nailing 3-pointers.
 
A bucket by freshman Jerekius Davis would later tie the game at 27-27 with 5:35 remaining in the half before Hardy would answer a three-point play by Delaware State's Joe Lewis with a 3-pointer that knotted the score at 30-30.
 
Louisiana took the lead for good with 3:33 remaining on a bucket by Wright, and the Ragin' Cajuns would push their lead to six points three times in the final 2:10 as Bartley scored a pair of buckets and Washington sank a pair of free throws.
 
Bartley, who finished 6-for-11 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the free throw line, gave Louisiana its biggest lead of the game – 70-61 – with a pair of free throws with 8:33 remaining.
 
Delaware State got as close as 80-77 after two free throws by Devin Morgan with :31 seconds remaining, but Bartley responded with pair of free throws on Louisiana's ensuing possession and Hardy sank one of two free throws for an 83-79 lead with :08 seconds left.
 
Louisiana finished 26-for-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor and 9-for-22 (a season-high 40.9 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Delaware State finished 29-for-64 (45.3 percent) from the floor and 11 of 12 (91.7 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Morgan scored 23 points to lead DSU with Haywood scoring 20. Dana Raysor came off the bench to add 15 points for the Hornets with Kavon Waller adding 10.
 
Louisiana will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to face James Madison in a 3 p.m. CST contest at the JMU Convocation Center.
