Ragin' Cajuns Unable to Catch Jaguars After Early Deficit

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball was unable to overcome a slow start on Sunday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym and fell to South Alabama 3-1 (18-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25) in the Homecoming Weekend finale.
The Ragin' Cajuns (9-19, 5-8 Sun Belt) found themselves in a 2-0 match deficit after a multitude of miscues, which included 15 attack errors, prevented the squad from taking advantage of a 21-20 kills advantage.
Louisiana bounced back with 16 kills on a .245 hitting percentage in the third set to grab a win and extend the match. The Jaguars (15-12, 6-8 Sun Belt), though, would overpower the Ragin' Cajuns in the fourth set with an 18-8 edge in kills to close out the win.
Chanelle Gardner and Stacey Reilly paced the Ragin' Cajuns attack with 10 kills each. Nia Antoine provided nine kills and Chloe Cordell scored six in support of the duo.
Gardner increased her career kills total to 970, leaving her 30 shy of becoming the first in the rally scoring era to each 1,000 with three regular season matches remaining.
Reilly added a team-high tying 16 digs to her stat line to land her 16th double-double of the season. Her kills tally marked the 22nd time reaching double figures.
Setter Jessica Bartczyszyn collected a double-double of her own, tallying 33 assists and 11 digs. Libero Sydney Davis joined Reilly in leading the Ragin' Cajuns in digs (16).
Mechell Daniel and Kelley Hartman led USA with a match-high 13 kills. Daniel and Kellyn Reeves each scooped a match-high 22 digs. Reeves handed out 26 assists and Ashlyn Roberts added 18.
The Jaguars finished the match with the advantage in kills (53-45), hitting percentage (.252-.157), assists (53-40), digs (86-74) and blocks (9-5).
The Jaguars led throughout the first set and created separation in the second set with a 4-0 run, which opened an 11-6 lead, in claiming a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
After a series of lead changes early in the third set, the Ragin' Cajuns offense gained steam to capture the momentum. Kills by Reilly and Hanna Rovira lifted Louisiana into an 8-7 lead. A little later, three straight kills from Antoine upped the advantage to 12-8.
USA did manage to force a pair of ties late, the last at 22-all, but a kill by Gardner gave the Ragin' Cajuns a sideout and then she combined with Chynna Brooks on a block to place the squad at set point.
The arm of Kristina Alabastro, who landed two kills, and a service ace from Ashley Roberts gave the Jaguars the first three points on a 5-1 run which gave the visitors the early edge in the third set.
The Jaguars, riding the offensive surge that was key to the fourth set triumph, found themselves ahead only 18-17 after a 6-0 Ragin' Cajuns run. Louisiana missed a chance to draw even after a service error, then back-to-back aces from Reeves followed by a kill from Nikki Gittens gave USA ample breathing room at 22-17.
The Ragin' Cajuns begin the final week of the regular season on Tuesday in Monroe facing ULM in a 6:30 p.m. match at Fant-Ewing Coliseum, then return to Earl K. Long Gym for matches with UT Arlington and Texas State on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to conclude the season.
