Late Run Carries Louisiana Past Privateers, 76-71

Cajuns close out game with 17-5 run for ninth win of the season

NEW ORLEANS – Senior guard Jay Wright scored five of his game-high 27 points in the final 1:05 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns erased a seven-point deficit with a 17-5 run over the final 5:06 to claim a 76-71 victory over New Orleans on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
 
Freshman Justin Miller scored 11 points and Frank Bartley added 10 as Louisiana (9-3) grabbed 19 offensive rebounds that led to a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points and overcome an impressive second-half performance by UNO (4-5), which shot 14-for-25 (56.0 percent) in the second half and 26-for-52 (50.0 percent for the game).
 
The Privateers erased a 56-50 deficit with a 12-0 run that began as Erik Thomas sank a pair of free throws and added dunk before a 3-pointer by Christavious Gill gave New Orleans a 57-56 lead with 8:16 remaining.
 
UNO would push their lead to 66-59 with 5:19 remaining after Nate Frye connected on a pair of free throws before the Ragin' Cajuns would mount a comeback.
 
Wright, who finished 9-for-20 from the floor with three 3-pointers, cut the UNO lead to 66-62 with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 5:06 remaining. The senior then added a pair of free throws that would cut the lead to 67-64 before tying the game on Louisiana's next possession with a 3-pointer with 3:22 left.
 
UNO took a 71-68 on a bucket by Frye with 2:20 left, but the Privateers would miss their last four shots of the game with the Ragin' Cajuns taking advantage.
 
A bucket by Miller with 1:55 remaining cut the Louisiana deficit to 71-70 and Wright would give the Ragin' Cajuns the lead for good, 72-71, with a short jumper with 1:05 left.
 
Wright and P.J. Hardy combined for four free throws down the stretch while UNO was called for an offensive foul with :19 seconds remaining with a chance to tie the game.
 
Bryce Washington grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, but had his string of six straight double-doubles snapped after being held to eight points. The junior recorded a career-best five steals in the contest at Louisiana forced 17 turnovers and recorded 11 steals.
 
Thomas posted a double-double for the Privateers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Tevin Broyles added 11 points for New Orleans, which lost at home for the first time this season, with Gill adding 11 pints and three steals.
 
Louisiana will return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 20) when it wraps up non-conference action against Pepperdine in a 7 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.
