One of two Brazilian juniors to join Cajuns in January
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis coach Mark Jeffrey announced on Wednesday the addition of Brazilian native Elio Lago to the 2016-17 roster.
Â
Lago, from Fortaleza, Brazil, was rated as one of the top Brazilian juniors earning a nationally pro ranking of No. 61. He was rated No. 1 in the Brazilian state of Ceara in the 12-and-under category and was No. 1 in both the 14- and 16-and-under groups in Rio de Janeiro.
Â
"Elio is a really hard worker, and will play an important role in trying to get our team back with a good process on the courts," Jeffrey said. "He will fit the mold of high character, being a responsible student athlete off the court and being a great team player for us. We look forward to Elio's arrival in the spring."
Â
Lago, a two-time Northeast champion (2013-14) in Brazil, captured two Futures qualifying events as an amateur.
Â
Louisiana will open the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule when it competes in the Florida State Invitational on Jan. 14-16 in Tallahassee, Fla. The Ragin' Cajuns will join host FSU in the tournament along with South Alabama, Troy, Georgia State, FAU, Southern Miss and Mercer.
