Little Rock Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Cajuns

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team was unable to complete the season sweep over Little Rock, falling by a 58-49 final to the Trojans at the Cajundome Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Cajuns to 16-7 and 9-5 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The Cajuns offense was limited to just 37.3% (19-of-51) shooting from the floor. Seniors Keke Veal (12) and Kia Wilridge (11) were the lone Louisiana players to hit double-digit points.
The two conference foes engaged in a defensive battle in the first quarter, combining for just 16 points (Little Rock led, 9-7).
The Trojans took an early 6-2 advantage in the first 6:29 of the game. Wilridge scored on a layup, drew a foul and completed the three-point play, bridging the gap to 6-5 on the next possession.
Little Rock sustained their one-possession lead through the 8:21 mark of the second quarter when a layup by Cajuns senior forward Adrienne Prejean knotted the game at 9-9.
Louisiana regained the lead with 7:37 to go in the second with a pair of free throws from senior Brooklyn Arceneaux.
Little Rock began a 6-0 run over the next 2:23 to pull in front, 15-11, but the Cajuns responded with a 6-0 spurt of their own to even the contest with 3:25 on the second quarter clock.
The teams traded buckets over the next four scoring plays and went into the locker room tied at 19-19.
In the third quarter, Little Rock and Louisiana both led by as many as four points at different stages of the stanza. The Cajuns scored the first four points of the quarter on layups by sophomores Jodi Quinn and Simone Fields.
Little Rock worked to tie the game at 29-29 at the 5:21 point, but the Cajuns continued to fight back for a slim advantage, regaining the lead twice at the 4:26 (31-29) and 1:43 (33-32) marks of the quarter.
With 1:06 to go in the third, the Trojans took the lead for good on a layup by Kaitlyn Pratt, making the score 34-33. On the final possession of the quarter, Little Rock's Monique Townson beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to extend their lead to 39-35.
Leading by as many as eight points in the fourth, Little Rock appeared to have a commanding advantage over the Cajuns. However, Louisiana responded by going on an 8-2 run over a span of 2:17. Veal scored four of the points, while Wilridge and Fields both contributed two each.
Leading 49-47, Pratt dropped in a layup to make it a two-possession game with 1:29 to go. Alexis Dawn was fouled by Wilridge and sank a pair of free throws to extend the Little Rock lead to 53-47 with 42 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
