Cajuns Rally To Defeat Bearkats In Extra Innings On Opening Night

2/19/2016 9:59:00 PM | Baseball

LAFAYETTE, La. – After falling behind 1-0 in the seventh inning, the sixth-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team rallied to defeat Sam Houston State 2-1 in 10 innings at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field on Friday night in the team's 2016 season opener.

"We got a critical play at a critical time in the game," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You want to end on a good note, especially at home. You want to take care of these good fans, especially when they are out in big, big numbers like they were. You're not going to win every game, but when you have a chance to win a game and your are tied, you want to get that done at home."

The win improves the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) to 16-6 in season openers and 18-4 in home openers under Robichaux.

Both teams had four hits in the contest with seven of the eight combined hits coming after the sixth inning.

Reliever Dylan Moore earned the victory for the Cajuns going 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to close out the contest. Moore had three strikeouts in the outing and did not give up a hit.

Sophomore Gunner Leger earned a no decision tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Leger retired the first 13 batters he faced in the contest and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Miles Manning took the loss for Sam Houston (0-1) after giving up one run on two hits with two walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Bearkats' starter Sam Odom also didn't factor in the decision despite holding Louisiana to one run on two hits with eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

Matt Broadbent put Sam Houston State in front 1-0 in the top of the seventh when he drove Bryce Johnson home on a ground ball hit to shortstop. Johnson singled to lead off the inning and then moved to third on an Andrew Fregia double.

The Ragin' Cajuns answered in the bottom half of the second as second baseman Brenn Conrad launched a solo home run over the fence in right to tie the game at 1-all. The home run is Conrad's second of his career and broke up a no-hitter for Odom.

Following two scoreless innings, the Cajuns got singles from outfielders Kyle Clement and Derek Herrington to start the bottom of the tenth. The pair would move up 90 feet due to a throwing error by Manning on the Herrington bunt single to put the winning run at third base.

After an intentional walk to freshman Dylon Poncho to load the bases, Clement would be thrown out at home on a ball hit to second by Johnny Rizer. With catcher Nick Thurman at the plate and one out, Herrington would come home to score on a Manning wild pitch to claim the victory.

The Cajuns and Bearkats return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at "The Tigue". Sophomore right-hander Wyatt Marks will make the start for Louisiana, while Sam Houston State will counter with left-hander Hayden Nixon.
