LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team returns to action this week as the squad hosts the 31st annual Louisiana Classics at the par-72, 7,098-yard Oakbourne Country Club starting Monday.
Â
Once again the tournament will feature a strong field with ranked teams in No. 1 Illinois, No. 33 Texas A&M, and No. 45 Kansas among the programs competing over the next two days. Host Louisiana, Illinois State, Kent State, Middle Tennessee, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Texas State, UTSA and UT Arlington make up the rest of the 12-team field.
Â
"Extremely honored and humbled to host the 31st annual Louisians Classics over the next few days," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We once again see a strong field and that is a testament to the support we get from Oakbourne and our supporters. Teams want to compete in our prestigious event due to many reasons; one that sets us apart is the people of Lafayette, the staff and members of Oakbourne welcoming all of the team's year in and year out. Thank you is not enough for all of the effort put forth by our support system here at Oakbourne Country Club."
Â
Play gets underway at 8 a.m. Monday with a shotgun start. The second round is slated to follow immediately following the completion of the first round. The third and final round is slated to get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with play starting off of holes one and ten.
Â
Admission to the event is free both days. For fans unable to attend, there is a free live stream of hole nine starting at 9 a.m. on RaginCajuns.com All-Access both days with Dan McDonald and Gerald Broussard providing commentary.
Â
Fernando Cruz Valle, Haraldur Magnus, Andres Navarrete, Ragnar Gardarsson and Christian Verrougstraete make up the lineup for the Cajuns for the Louisiana Classics.
Â
Both Cruz Valle and Magnus have posted six top 25 finishes this season. Magnus paces the team with a 71.60 scoring average that ranks top 100 in the nation, while Cruz Valle is second with a 72.85 average.
Â
"From a competitive standpoint we have opened our spring season weaker than we expected," Sliman said. "I have the utmost confidence in our teams unity and leadership to manifest this week at home. The guys are ready to compete and take great pride in our home event. We have a great opportunity this week to start some momentum against some very solid teams."
Â
Triston Elston, Ryan Desormeaux, Paul San, Ross Davis and Grant Welch will compete as individuals for the Ragin' Cajuns at the tournament.
Â
Louisiana is paired with Illinois and Texas A&M for the first two rounds. Live scoring for the event is available on Golfstat.com.
