Errors Cost Cajuns In Matchup With Tenth-Ranked LSU

METAIRIE, La. – The 29th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team could not overcome four costly errors as the squad fell to No. 10 LSU 8-5 Tuesday night in the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic at Zephyr Field.
The Cajuns (12-9, 3-3 Sun Belt) were outhit 11-6 by the Tigers (15-5, 1-2 SEC) in the contest. Four LSU hitters posted a pair of hits led by Jake Fraley who was 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Steven Sensley had a game-high three RBI coming on his second home run of the season.
Starter Evan Guillory dropped to 1-3 on the year after giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work. Guillory struck out two and did not allow a free pass in the outing.
Junior Jevin Huval was strong in relief tossing three scoreless innings to close out the contest, while Hogan Harris game up one unearned run in one inning of work.
The Tigers used eight pitchers in the game with Alden Cartwright picking up his third win of 2016 with a perfect 1.1 innings pitched. Jesse Stallings tallied his first save of the year as he recorded the final two outs of the night.
The Cajuns jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the Stefan Trosclair scored on a Cole McKay wild pitch with two outs.
LSU answered in the bottom half of the third plating two runs on back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Kramer Robertson and Fraley to take a 2-1 edge.
The Tigers extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth scoring three unearned runs with two outs. Bryce Jordan scored on a Guillory wild pitch to give LSU a 3-1 lead. Cole Freeman added two more on a single through the left side of the infield to give the Tigers a four-run cushion.
Louisiana would get a big four-run inning in the fifth to even the contest at 5-all. After Nick Thurman doubled to lead off the inning, he would come around to score on an Alex Pinero single and an error by LSU third baseman Greg Deichmann to cut the deficit to 5-2. With two outs and two on, Sensley would send a 3-2 fastball from Russell Reynolds well over the fence in right to even the contest for the second time in the game.
The Tigers would jump back in front for good in the bottom half of the fifth scoring three runs on three hits and two Cajuns errors to an 8-5 lead. Fraley came through with the game-winning hit singling home Robertson with no outs. A Beau Jordan sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Deichmann gave LSU the three-run edge.
Neither team would plate a run in the final four frames of the game as Tigers pitching retired 13 straight Cajuns to close out the contest.
The Ragin' Cajuns return to action this weekend as they host Georgia State in a three-game series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
