Women's Tennis Falls in Narrow 4-2 Final

LAFAYETTE -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team went toe-to-toe with Sun Belt Conference foe ULM, but came up short, falling by a 4-2 final at Cajun Courts Thursday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Cajuns to .500 at 8-8 this season, while ULM improved to 10-2.
"I'm proud of the way we started off and it was great to win the doubles point," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "Today we just didn't stay consistent enough in our attitude and it caused us to give away too many free points. We still have another match left in the weekend and I'm hoping we can compete with higher and more consistent energy."
The Cajuns swept doubles to grab an early 1-0 lead. Senior Melissa Burckhartt and sophomore Kelly Drew defeated Ioana Popescu and Pauline Van Herck, 6-1 at No.1 doubles. Senior Juliette Clement and sophomore Elena Sava closed out doubles at No. 3 with a 6-4 victory over Patricia Villar and Martina Husarova.
In singles, sophomore Abby Johnson defeated Popescu, 6-2, 6-1 in straight sets from No. 5, but ULM came back at the No. 4 spot as Villar prevailed over junior Dana Brankovic, 6-2, 6-1.
The next three matches went to the Warhawks. Tiffany Mylonas beat Burckhartt in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Luana Stanciu went three sets with Clement, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Husarova preserved the win for ULM at No. 1 with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sava.
The Cajuns next will host No. 50 UT Arlington Saturday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m. from Cajun Courts.
