Cajuns Deliver Strong Doubleheader Performance at Troy

3/25/2016 10:46:00 PM | Softball

TROY, Ala. – The No. 5-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team utilized a pair of 11-hit attacks to power past the Troy Trojans 11-0, 8-1 in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader on Good Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.

The twinbill sweep gave Louisiana (24-2, 6-1 Sun Belt) the series victory over Troy (21-9, 4-4 Sun Belt) for the 11th time in as many meetings. It also secured a Sun Belt series victory for the 24th straight series (dates back to March 2013).

The Ragin' Cajuns totaled 19 runs, 22 base hits and six home runs in the doubleheader to return to the winning track after falling in the series finale at UT Arlington last Sunday.

Shellie Landry provided the big bat for Louisiana, finishing the doubleheader 5-for-8 at the plate with three home runs and six RBI. Landry homered twice in the opener and posted her third three-hit game of the season (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) in the nightcap.

Sara Corbello collected a pair of multiple-hit games with two hits in both games. Like Landry, she homered in both games. The senior designated player posted a career-high tying four RBI in Game 1 and raised season her batting average 41 points (from .261 to .302).

Alex Stewart continued her undefeated start to the season, improving to 11-0 which is her career-best start topping last season's 10-0 start. Stewart scattered five hits over seven innings in Game 1 and recorded a career-high tying 11 strikeouts.

Kylee Jo Trahan surrendered just three hits over seven innings in Game 2 – her longest outing since pitching as many innings in a one-hit shutout of Samford back on Feb. 13 in Gulf Shores. Her eight strikeouts marked the sixth time in eight starts of at least five innings pitched that she reached the tally.

No. 5 Louisiana and Troy conclude the three-game Sun Belt series with a 12 p.m. single game on Saturday.

An opposite field, solo home run by Landry home run in the first inning gave the Cajuns the early lead in the opener. A pair of RBI singles, one by Kara Gremillion and Haley Hayden, in the second inning increased the lead to 3-0.

Stewart and Troy's Ashley Rainey traded scoreless frames from the third through fifth inning.

The Ragin' Cajuns began to create separation in the sixth inning, plating three runs capped off by a two-run home run from Corbello.

Landry's second home run of the game (two-run shot) and a two-run single by Corbello fueled a five-run seventh inning for Louisiana that grew the lead to 11-0.

Stewart did not allow a Trojans runner to move past second base the entire game. The shutout was her second complete game shutout of the season and the pitching staff's 11th.

The Ragin' Cajuns piled up eight runs over first three innings of Game 2 in completing the doubleheader sweep with an 8-1 win.

Louisiana struck in the first inning once again. Lexie Elkins launched a two-run home run for an early 2-0 lead. It was Elkins' nation-leading 17th home run of the season and 73rd of her career.

Four more runs were added on in the second inning on homers by Corbello (solo) and Landry (three-run). A bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder from Haley Hayden and walk by Elkins resulted in two additional runs for the Cajuns in third inning.

Troy received its lone run of the doubleheader in the fourth inning when Amanda Winters led off with a solo home run.

The final three innings were kept scoreless by the pitching efforts of Trahan and Trojans reliever Meg Willis.
