Hudspeth to welcome back 19 starters, 46 letterwinners
LAFAYETTE – Head coach Mark Hudspeth will welcome 19 starters and 46 returning letterwinners as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football officially opens spring practice on Tuesday at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns will conduct the first of 15 practices leading up the annual Red-White Spring Game, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at Cajun Field. Louisiana will hold afternoon workouts mainly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with the majority of drills scheduled for the football practice fields and adjacent Leon Moncla Indoor Facility.
Â
Hudspeth, entering his sixth season at Louisiana, looks to replace several key players from last year's team, including first-team All-Sun Belt Conference performers Jamal Robinson and Dominique Tovell. The Ragin' Cajuns will look to replace departed starters Mykhael Quave and Donovan Williams on the offensive line, along with honorable mention All-SBC pick Chris Prater.
Â
One of the key position battles in the spring will be at quarterback where sophomore Jordan Davis and redshirt freshman Chris Weaver are expected to compete. The Ragin' Cajuns will also get a good look at running back as redshirt freshman Jordan Wright and returning letterwinner Darius Hoggins will look to back up Elijah McGuire.
Â
"We're excited about getting started and getting back on the field with our players," Hudspeth said. "We've got a lot of installation to do with a new offense and we're excited about working with a lot of the redshirt freshmen and putting this team together."
Â
Gabe Fuselier, Al Riles and Devin Scott are slated to see the majority of snaps at wide receiver for Louisiana with Nick Byrne and Matthew Barnes projected to compete at tight end. Returning starters D'Aquin Withrow, Eddie Gordon and Grant Horst will look to anchor an offensive line with Adrian Goodacre and Jesse Freeman penciled in to start on the interior.
Â
Defensively, second-team All-SBC selection Savion Brown returns in the secondary for the Ragin' Cajuns while Otha Peters will look to build off an impressive season at linebacker. Tre'maine Lightfoot, Trey Granier and T.J. Posey are expected to contribute at linebacker for Louisiana with Taboris Lee, LaDarrius Kidd and Mario Osborne set to start on the defensive line.
Â
Defensive backs Tracy Walker and Dominick Jones will return to play key roles for the Ragin' Cajuns, while returning starters Troy McCollum and Travis Crawford will look to build off a successful 2015 campaign.
Â
The Cajuns will work for three weeks before taking off for spring break on March 24. Louisiana will return to practice on April 5 for its final seven practices, which includes the Spring Game.
"There are probably some plusses and some negatives when you have a break in the middle," Hudspeth said. "One plus is your kids get a little bit of a break after three hard weeks of practice. If there's a negative, you sort of lose a little bit of continuity that you built up. Typically, you catch up pretty quick. We've done it before and we had good results with it."
Â
Louisiana will open the 2016 season on Sept. 3 against Boise State at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also host McNeese State (Sept. 10), South Alabama (Sept. 17), Appalachian State (Oct. 12), Idaho (Nov. 5) and Arkansas State (Nov. 26).
Â
Season ticket renewals, as well as 2016 season ticket deposits, will begin later this month. For more information, contact the Cajundome Box Office at (337) 265-2357 or online at RaginCajuns.com.
