DESTIN, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team stumbled out of the gates in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Monday posting the highest score on the day with a round of 16-over par (300) to finish the day in 11th at the par-71, 6,887-yard Raven Golf Course.
Â
"Not a very good effort from the team today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We are much better than what we showed. I think this is actually what the team needed, a little slap in the face with the wet towel to wake us up. This round is now behind us, and we need to come out and have a strong team round to get back into contention."
Â
Georgia State leads the field carding an 18-hole score of 2-under (282). Texas State (+4, 288), Troy (+4, 288), Arkansas State (+5, 289) and UT Arlington (+6, 290) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
The Panthers J.J. Grey sits atop the individual leaderboard with a first round score of 65 (-6).
Â
Haraldur Magnus and Triston Elston paced the Cajuns as the pair each tallied a score of 2-over (73) to sit in a tie for 17th. Elston had three birdies on the day, while Magnus had just one blemish in his final nine holes.
Â
"Aside from a blemish on the final hole of the day, Triston played a solid round for us," Sliman said. "He was able to handle playing with the No. 1 group and could have turned in a round under par if not for that blemish."
Â
Ragnar Gardarsson is two strokes back of Elston and Magnus in a tie for 32nd at 4-over (75). Fernando Cruz Valle and Paul San round out the scoring as Cruz Valle ended the day in a tie for 50h at 8-over (79), while San is in 55th at 13-over (84).
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns are paired with Appalachian State for the second round. The Cajuns will start off of hole ten with play getting underway at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
