Louisiana Bounces Back To Defeat UT Arlington In Nightcap, 6-4

4/30/2016 9:41:00 PM | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas – The 14th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team bounced back from a series opening loss to win a 6-4 decision over UT Arlington in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The victory ends a three-game losing streak and improves the Cajuns to 28-16 overall and 13-7 in Sun Belt play.

Louisiana outhit the Mavericks (23-21, 9-11 Sun Belt) 15-12 in the contest as Kyle Clement, Brian Mills and Nick Thurman each had three hits. The 15 hits is the second most by the Ragin' Cajuns in a game this season. Clement drove in three runs in the contest, while Mills scored three times.

"It was a good job for our hitters to respond in the second game today," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Things that weren't falling for us in the first game were falling for us in this one. It's important for us to be able to fight back and win after a tough loss. I think we are over what we were in and tomorrow will tell us for sure. We need to come out ready to play tomorrow and carry over this momentum."

Reliever Eric Carter (3-1) claimed the win for the Cajuns throwing 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Sophomore Dylan Moore notched his 11th save of the year and 24th of his career with a nine-out save. Moore struck out three and allowed three hits with two walks.

UTA starter Joel Kuhnel (4-3) was tabbed with the loss after giving up five runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.

The Cajuns got on the board early as Kyle Clement brought home Hunter Kasuls on an RBI ground out to second base to give Louisiana a 1-0 lead. In the next at bat, Brenn Conrad doubled to left center to score Mills and give the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-run edge.

UT Arlington cut into the Cajuns lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI double by Darien McLemore to make the score 2-1.

Louisiana got a run back in the top of the third on an RBI ground out by Brenn Conrad to second base scoring Mills. Mills reached on a bunt single and then moved to third on a Clement single.

The Mavericks plated three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. R.J. Williams brought home the first run of the inning on an RBI single through the left side of the infield to pull UT Arlington within a run. Later in in the inning, Quintin Rohrbaugh hit a two-out, two-run single through the left side of the infield to put UTA in front.

Kasuls evened the contest at 4-all in the top of the seventh on a double to deep centerfield scoring Thurman. Two batters later, Clement doubled to right to plate Kasuls and put the Ragin' Cajuns back in front 5-4.

Clement added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on two-out double to right field scoring Mills to put Louisiana up 6-4.

UT Arlington threatened in the bottom half of the ninth putting runners on the corners with one out, but Moore got Rohrbaugh to hit into a double play to end the contest.

The Cajuns and Mavericks close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Freshman right-hander Nick Lee will make the start for Louisiana in the rubber match, while left-hander Jake Wilcox will take the bump or UTA.
