Cajuns Continue Record Run In Top 5 of National Polls

4/5/2016 5:05:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team remained in the Top 5 of both national polls which were unveiled on Tuesday, extending record stays in the grouping.

ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll
USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll

The Ragin' Cajuns remained at No. 5 in the USA Today/NFCA poll for the fifth consecutive week (dates back to March 8). Five straight weeks in the Top 5 of the NFCA poll bests the previous record of four straight weeks first established March 31-April 21 of 1999.

Louisiana's run in the Top 5 of the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, which began on March 1, was stretched to six weeks as the squad came in at No. 5 in this week's listing.

The Ragin' Cajuns have now been ranked inside the Top 5 of both of the national polls five weeks running.

Head coach Michael Lotief's squad began the season preseason ranked No. 11, moved into the Top 10 after the season-opening weekend and first appeared in the Top 5 in the Feb. 29 release of the polls (No. 5 ESPN.com/USA Softball poll).

The national polls have a consensus Top 5 group: each poll features the Ragin' Cajuns, along with Florida, Auburn, Alabama of the SEC, and the Big 10's Michigan.

The Ragin' Cajuns are the lone Sun Belt Conference school ranked in either of the Top 25 polls. South Alabama is receiving votes in in the NFCA poll.

Louisiana has a longstanding tradition of being nationally ranked, having finished the season ranked in 23 of the past 26 seasons. The program is on a current stretch of four straight seasons (2012-15) with a Top 15 finish.

No. 5 Louisiana (29-3, 10-1 Sun Belt) is coming off a 4-1 week that included a doubleheader spilt at No. 18 Baylor highlighted by Kelsey Vincent's grand slam in Game 2 and a Sun Belt Conference sweep of Texas State that saw Sara Corbello homer in all three game of a series for the second consecutive weekend series and Alex Stewart extend her conference shutout streak to five games.

The No. 5-ranked Ragin' Cajuns return to the road this weekend and start a stretch of seven straight games away from Lamson Park, beginning with a three-game series in Atlanta against Georgia State (19-18, 4-5 Sun Belt) set for Saturday-Sunday, April 9-10. The Ragin' Cajuns and Panthers open the series with a 12 p.m. (CDT) doubleheader on Saturday.
