Cajuns to Face Georgia State in Sun Belt Tourney Opener

MOBILE, Ala. – No. 9 Ragin' Cajuns Softball is set to face Georgia State at 10 a.m., on Thursday, May 12 in its opening contest at the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament at Jaguar Field on the University of South Alabama campus.

Georgia State (31-26) advanced to meet the top-seeded Ragin' Cajuns (40-7) in the opening game of the winner's bracket with a 10-2 (6 inn.) win over ULM during Wednesday's opening round.

The UL-GSU matchup will be broadcast on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM with Steve Peloquin and Bobby Neveaux calling the action. Live video, with play-by-play from Lafayette's own Dan McDonald, will be available on SunBeltSports.org.

The loser faces elimination at 3 p.m., on Thursday while the winner advances to the winner's bracket final at 11 a.m., on Friday with a chance to earn a spot in Saturday's 1 p.m., championship game. Friday and Saturday action at the tournament will be aired on ESPN3.

It's the second straight year the Ragin' Cajuns begin SBC Tournament play against the Panthers. A year ago in San Marcos, Texas, Louisiana defeated Georgia State 10-2 (6 inn.) on May 7, 2015, to advance in the winner's bracket.

Louisiana swept the season series from Georgia State held April 9-10 in Atlanta. DJ Sanders homered to provide the winning runs in a 4-1, 6-5 doubleheader sweep on Saturday and the Ragin' Cajuns cruised to a 12-0 (5 inn.) win in the series finale behind a six-run outburst in the second inning that was punctuated by a three-run home run from Shellie Landry.

The Ragin' Cajuns, who have swept all three previous Sun Belt season series with the Panthers, carry a 14-game series win streak into Thursday's contest.
