Cajuns Go 1-2 In Decathlon; Third In SBC Standings Heading Into Sunday

Fusilier, Moreau go 2-3 in heptathlon; Carter, Brazil, Hrusoci among Cajuns to qualify for Sunday finals
LAFAYETTE – Franz Beyer and Angus Sinclair capped off a 1-2 finish in the men's decathlon for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team while Jasmin Fusilier and Kaitlyn Moreau finished second and third overall in the women's heptathlon after the second day of the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Complex.

Louisiana finished the second day of action third overall in the men's standings with 41 points, trailing South Alabama (57) and Arkansas State (55). The Ragin' Cajuns were fifth in women's events with 38 points trailing South Alabama (82), Texas State (52), Appalachian State (50) and Arkansas State (46).

The final day of the three-day event will start on Sunday at 10 a.m. with the finals in the men's discus and concluding with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 8 p.m.

Beyer held on to his first-day lead after scoring 6,830 points with Sinclair finishing second overall with 6,584 points. Beyer claimed three events on the final day, taking first-place honors in the 110-meter hurdles (15.76), the javelin (174-11) and the 1,500-meter run (5:00.40). Sinclair claimed the discus throw for Louisiana with a mark of 136-2.

Fusilier (4,986) and Moreau (4,869) trailed Arkansas State's Samone Thompson (5,067) in the final standings with Alexandra Harrell (4,659) finishing eighth for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Harrell added a sixth-place finish in the high jump (5-7 ¼) for Louisiana while Claire Hodges earned a fifth-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Fusilier was one of several Ragin' Cajuns to qualify for finals on Sunday after she posted a time of 14.10 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles. Alena Hrusoci qualified for both the 100-meter hurdles (13.84) and 400-meter hurdles (1:01.51) while Kayla Thompson qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash (12.00).

Hanoj Carter advanced to the finals of both the men's 100-meter dash (10.61) and 200-meter dash (20.95), with Jeryl Brazil reaching the finals of the 100-meters (10.47), Tyler Hughes advancing in the 110-meter hurdles (14.45) and Morgan Cormier moving on in the 400-meter hurdles (53.41).
