Early Offense Leads Sooners to Win in Supers Opener

5/26/2016 11:30:00 PM | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. – No. 3 Oklahoma plated five runs in its first two at bats, using the production as a springboard to an 8-2 win over No. 9-ranked Ragin' Cajuns Softball in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Softball Norman Super Regional held Thursday evening at Marita Hynes Field.

With the win, the Sooners (51-7) take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series which holds a spot in next week's Women's College Series for the winner.

The Ragin' Cajuns (46-8) will attempt to force a winner-take-all contest when the two teams meet in Game 2 of the series on Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. If needed, Game 3 would take place at 9 p.m., on Friday on ESPNU.

"Hopefully now our kids can get some rest and start thinking about what adjustments we need to make," Ragin' Cajuns Softball head coach Michael Lotief said. "We need to lock in, set our resolve and fight as hard as we can fight. It's going to take everybody, every pitch for 14 innings.

"At this stage of the game, that's what it's about," Lotief added. "It's about whose resolve is stronger. I trust my kids. They've been resilient all year. I look forward to a great challenge in front of us tomorrow."

Kara Gremillion topped the Ragin' Cajuns with three hits (3-for-3) to increase her team-leading hits total vs. ranked teams in 2016 to 13. Lexie Elkins joined her in double digits finishing 2-for-3 with a home run in the sixth inning that marked her team-leading 19th of the season.

Erin Miller (3-for-4) and Caleigh Clifton (3-for-3) paced the Sooners' offense with three hits apiece. Fale Aviu drove home a game-high three RBI for the hosts.

Alex Stewart (29-5) was charged with just the fifth defeat of her junior campaign. She allowed eight runs (six earned), but bounced back from the first two innings with three straight scoreless frames before the Sooners tacked on three runs in the sixth inning.

Haley Hayden provided Louisiana the lead two pitches into contest when she drove an offering from Paige Parker out of the park in left center for a solo home run and a 1-0 lead.

The Sooners answered in the bottom of the first after loading the bases with no outs and plating three runs off of a pair of infield singles and suicide squeeze bunt.

Parker kept the momentum on Oklahoma's side in the second inning, retiring the Cajuns in order to extend her string of consecutive batters retired after Hayden's homer to six. A two-out, two-run double from Fale Aviu extended the Sooners lead to 5-1 in the bottom half of the frame.

The Ragin' Cajuns turned to their defense in the third inning, with an outfield assist from Shellie Landry on a fly ball with the bases loaded being key to holding the Sooners in their tracks. Stewart then settled in and retired Oklahoma in order in the fourth and fifth inning.

Elkins brought her team within three runs with a solo home run in the sixth inning. OU responded with home runs from Clifton (two-run) and Sydney Romero (solo) to generate the final margin.
