Louisiana Falls To App State 6-1 To Even Series

5/7/2016 9:56:00 PM | Baseball

LAFAYETTE, La. – The 19th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team couldn't overcome an Appalachian State four-run seventh inning as the Cajuns fell 6-1 to the Mountaineers on Saturday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The Ragin' Cajuns (30-17, 15-8 Sun Belt) were outhit 7-6 in the contest by App State (15-32, 9-17 Sun Belt). Matt Vernon led the Mountaineers with two hits, two runs and two RBI on the night.

App State starter Breydan Gorham (3-4) notched his third win of the season holding the Ragin' Cajuns to one run on six hits in seven innings.

"Their guy didn't give us any momentum all night long," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You have to give him credit. He pitched a good ball game, and did what a good pitcher does by not giving us anything. We just couldn't get any momentum on him and then the game spun on us late."

Junior Alex Pinero led the Cajuns going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Kyle Clement saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end.

Sophomore Wyatt Marks was the tough-luck loser falling to 3-6 on the year despite posting his sixth quality start of the season. Marks limited the Mountaineers to two runs on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts.

"Wyatt threw another good ball game giving us six strong innings," Robichaux said. "He gave us a chance to win only giving up two runs. We just couldn't support him."

App State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI groundout to second base by Brian Bauk.

The Mountaineers increased their advantage to 2-0 in the top of the fifth on an RBI double down the left field line by Jason Curtis.

Appalachian State took a commanding lead in the top of the seventh scoring four runs on three hits and an error to take a 6-0 advantage. Conner Leonard scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error by right fielder Steven Sensley to give the Mountaineers a three-run lead. Later in the inning, Vernon tripled home two runs to make the score 5-0. Vernon then scored on a pass ball to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Cajuns plated their only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI ground out to third base by Brian Mills.

Louisiana and Appalachian State meet in the rubber match tomorrow at noon at The Tigue. Freshman right-hander Nick Lee (6-1, 3.22 ERA) will make the start for the Cajuns, while freshman left-hander Colin Schmid (1-6, 5.62 ERA) will take the mound for the Mountaineers.

The game will be broadcast live on myAcadianaTV and simulcast on ESPN3.com. Fans can also listen to the game on News Talk 96.5 KPEL-FM with Jay Walker making the call.
