Ragin' Cajuns Fall Camp Report - Week 3

8/15/2016 9:52:00 PM | Football

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team wrapped up three weeks of camp on Saturday morning, holding a 100-play controlled scrimmage at Cajun Field.

Quarterback Jordan Davis threw a pair of touchdown passes with Anthony Jennings and Jalen Nixon tossing for one score each for Louisiana, which opens the season on Sept. 3 against Boise State in an 11 a.m. contest at Cajun Field. Stevie Artigue booted a pair of field goals for the Ragin' Cajuns while Denarious Howard recovered a fumble for the defense.

"It was probably a little more (scrimmage) than we planned to do," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "We went a couple of extra series at times when I felt like we needed a little more work. I saw some really positive things from both sides of the ball and a lot of guys got to play. We got a chance to evaluate some players to see if we think they are ready for prime time."

Each of the quarterbacks took turns directing the No. 1 offense with Davis tossing TDs to Michael Jacquet and Carlos Robinson. Nixon added a touchdown pass to Gary Haynes while Jennings connected with Chris Collins for a score.

"Overall, good stuff … both teams ended up doing some good things," Hudspeth said. "Defensively, we got some red zone stops and caused a red zone turnover. Offensively, we hit on a couple of good plays and it was good to see some guys making plays. All of the quarterbacks did some good stuff and took care of the ball … they all completed a high percentage of their passes."

Hudspeth officially announced that defensive back Reggie Miles was awarded a scholarship during Friday's final team meeting of fall camp. Miles, a fifth-year senior, led the Ragin' Cajuns with nine special teams tackles last season.

Season tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Box Office at (337) 265-2357 or visiting on-line at RaginCajuns.com/Tickets.

PRACTICE #16 | Shells | Cajun Field
LAFAYETTE –
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns returned to practice on Friday with a two-hour workout at Cajun Field, working out in shells and putting in the final preparations for its final scrimmage of fall camp.

Louisiana, which will host Mountain West Conference opponent Boise State in an 11 a.m. contest on Sept. 3, worked on third-down situations and special teams during the day. The Ragin' Cajuns, who will hold a 70-play, closed scrimmage on Saturday to wrap up fall camp, got off to a good start to the workout before inconsistency

"It was not a consistent day at all, it was probably one of our least consistent of camp," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "It was up-and-down the whole practice, then at the end, guys just were not giving us what it takes to be a championship team. Hopefully tomorrow, we can walk out of camp basically with a better feeling if we have a really good scrimmage."

Quarterbacks Jordan Davis, Jalen Nixon and Anthony Jennings will each take turns directing the No. 1 offense with battles at other positions looking to be filled.

"It will be some good work tomorrow, we've got a lot of guys who have done a good job this camp," Hudspeth said. "Hopefully, we can finish (camp) on a good note."

PRACTICE #15 | Helmets | Moncla Indoor Practice Facility

Louisiana, which will open the season on Sept. 3 against Boise State, emphasized on special teams and third-down situations in the morning workout, while working on its red zone package and special teams in the evening.

"Today, I thought we had effort, plus everybody doing their assignment," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "Whether it's setting the edge, taking your gap, getting lined up in a great stance and playing with the proper leverage. All of those things defensively, I thought we did a much better job. I thought they got after us in our third-down period and that was good to see."

Led by returning punter Steven Coutts and placekicker Stevie Artigue, the Ragin' Cajuns special teams unit is expected to be one of the strong areas in 2016. A trio of players looking to fill the role at kick returner for Louisiana includes Elijah McGuire, Darius Hoggins and freshman Raymond Calais.

McGuire and Gary Haynes are primed to serve as punt returners for Louisiana with Stephen Morella returning to serve as the Ragin' Cajuns long snapper with Sterling Miller set to handle the holding duties.

Louisiana will return to action on Friday with a single practice at 8:45 a.m., before holding its final closed scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday at 11 a.m.

PRACTICE #13 | Shells | Moncla Indoor Practice Facility
LAFAYETTE –
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team returned to practice on Wednesday, working out for nearly two hours in shells in the Moncla Indoor Practice Facility.

The Ragin' Cajuns fine tuned parts of their offensive and defensive packages while working on special teams and holding a 30-play live period. Redshirt freshman Deuce Wallace highlighted play for the defense during red zone drills as he returned an interception nearly the length of the field for a touchdown.

52877"Great effort, really great energy," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "When our guys keep bringing it like they brought it today that just fires us up as a staff. You can see depth starting to develop and the lights are starting to come on for some of the young guys. The thinking part is getting less and the reaction part … the instinctive part of the game is starting to pick up."

Quarterbacks Anthony Jennings, Jordan Davis and Jalen Nixon each took turns directing the No. 1 offense during live action. A young receiving corp, under former Louisiana quarterback and first-year assistant Mike Desormeaux, continued to impress with junior Gabe Fuselier and the redshirt freshman tandem of Ja'Marcus Bradley and Michael Jacquet highlighting the group.

PRACTICE #12 | Shells | Moncla Indoor Facility
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team worked out for nearly two hours on Tuesday, working on all phases of its game in the Moncla Indoor Practice Facility before heading out to assist in the cleanup of areas effected by the recent flooding in the Lafayette area.

52891Louisiana, which will open the season on Sept. 3 against Boise State at Cajun Field, worked out in shells in a 17-period workout that saw emphasis in special teams.

Quarterbacks Anthony Jennings, Jalen Nixon and Jordan Davis each took turns directing the offense while the Ragin' Cajuns worked on its kickoff return unit and field goal teams.

"We've had really good days, back-to-back," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "And as a coach, that is what you want to see, you want to see us stack some really solid days back-to-back. And when you do that, you really feel like you're getting better and you're seeing improvement. The effort was really there again. And even though it was much warmer this morning than what it was last night, the guys came out and improved in a lot of areas."

After team meetings in the afternoon, the Ragin' Cajuns went to Highland Ridge Subdivision in Youngsville – an area that was hit hard by last week's torrential rains that impacted much of South Louisiana. Team members, along with coaches and support staff helped residents in cleanup efforts.

PRACTICE #10 | Helmets | Cajun Field
LAFAYETTE –
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team kicked off the third week of fall camp on Monday as it held a pair of workouts at Cajun Field.

52899Louisiana, which will kick off the season against Boise State on Sept. 3 at Cajun Field, worked for nearly two hours in full gear in the morning before coming back with a near two-hour workout in helmets.

The Ragin' Cajuns battled through the early morning heat and humidity as they continued installing their offensive and defensive packages while putting emphasis on short-yardage and red zone situations. In the evening session, Louisiana continued to work on fundamentals while wrapping up the workout with the two-minute drill.

During the two-minute drill, quarterbacks Jalen Nixon and Anthony Jennings each led the offense on scoring drives. Receivers Michael Jacquet and Matt Barnes each recorded clutch receptions to keep their respective drives alive with Stevie Artigue and Dylan Scheurich capping the drives with field goals.

"We just had a really good practice tonight, it was some of the best energy that we've had since we started camp," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "I thought they flew around and came back from a break this afternoon, competed well and came out with a sense of urgency."
