Hudspeth welcomes 105 players to camp; first workout set for Thursday
LAFAYETTE – Sixth-year head coach Mark Hudspeth welcomed 105 players to campus on Wednesday as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team officially opened fall camp in preparation for its Sept. 3 opener against Boise State at Cajun Field.
The Ragin' Cajuns checked into their dorms and held team meetings, while Hudspeth, offensive coordinator Jorge Munoz, defensive coordinator Melvin Smith and selected players participated in the annual Media Day at the Student-Athlete Performance Center.
"This is my favorite day of the year because it's reporting day," Hudspeth said during his address to the media. "It's the day our kids return to campus after a great summer … they've been home for a few days and they come back and their mind is fresh and their body's renewed."
Louisiana, which will host Boise State, McNeese State (Sept. 10) and South Alabama (Sept. 17) to open the season, returns 46 letterwinners and 15 starters. Returning starters Savion Brown, Otha Peters, Tracy Walker, Taboris Lee and Karmichael Dunbar look to lead a resurgent defensive unit under second-year defensive coordinator Melvin Smith.
"Defensively, we're a much deeper football team than we were at this point last year," Hudspeth said. "Our defensive line depth is the best it's been since I've been here (in 2011)."
The Ragin' Cajuns will see a new look in 2016 under new offensive coordinator Jorge Munoz, and will have a new quarterback as returning letterwinner Jordan Davis and LSU transfer Anthony Jennings will compete for the job. A young crop of receivers will look to replace All-Sun Belt performer Jamal Robinson while Eddie Gordon looks to anchor an offensive line that replaces two starters.
With the new faces on the offensive side of the ball, senior Elijah McGuire will look to continue his assault on the Ragin' Cajuns record books as he enters his senior season fourth on the school's career rushing list (3,185 yards) and third in all-purpose yards (4,572).
"On the offensive side, you've got Elijah McGuire back for his senior season," Hudspeth said. "He provides an opportunity for our fans to show up at Cajun Field to see one of the best running backs in the country."
Louisiana will hold its first practice on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility. The Ragin' Cajuns will work in shells beginning Saturday before holding their first workout in full gear beginning Tuesday.
Each day fans will be able to watch the opening periods of practice live through various Ragin' Cajuns Facebook accounts. To get the video alerts fans will need to follow the Cajuns on Facebook at facebook.com/ragincajunsathletics/, facebook.com/ragincajunsfootball/ or facebook.com/ulcoachhud/.
