Louisiana begins Sun Belt Conference play on Friday
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Jamila Coner snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 55th minute and Mississippi State edged the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team, 2-1, on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.
Louisiana (4-4), which was playing in its final non-conference tuneup before opening Sun Belt Conference play next week, tied the match 1-1 in the 43rd minute on a goal deep inside the box from senior Mackenzie Higgins, her eighth of the season. Junior Ashleigh Cade was credited with her sixth assist of the season.
Coner scored her first goal of the season for Mississippi State (5-3) after getting an assist from Mallory Eubanks. Eubanks gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead earlier in the match when she scored her second goal of the season in the 22nd minute on a breakaway goal.
"The plan today was to get after them and I really felt like we did," head coach Scot Wieland said of his team's performance against MSU. "I'm proud of them and the game could have gone either way."
Cosette Morche recorded six saves for the Ragin' Cajuns, who have won three of their last four matches. Tanya de Souza had five saves for the Bulldogs.
"Next weekend the season starts," Wieland said. "So, all of these games including today is all about working up to next weekend's conference start. Today was another opportunity for us to get better and I felt we did that and now the real season starts."
