HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns freshman golfer Aron Juliusson notched a top 5 finish in his first career outing with the Cajuns as he placed in a tie for third at 4-under par (209) on Tuesday at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted at the par-71, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
Â
"I'm very impressed and proud of Aron's top 5 finish as well as Jack Tolson's finish in the top 15," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Aside from a couple mishaps coming down the stretch, Aron had himself in position to win the tournament. It's nice to see a freshman pushing the rest of the team. The future looks bright."
Â
Juliusson picked up a birdie in his second to last hole to secure a spot in the top 5 with a final round score of 72 (+1). The freshman is the seventh Ragin' Cajuns player in the last six years to finish in the top 10 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The Gardabaer, Iceland native finished one stroke back of Zander Lozano of UTSA and Billy Tom Sargent of WKU for the individual title.
Â
Tolson carded his second round of par or better at the tournament in the final round posting a score of 71 (E) to finish in a tie for 12th at even par (213). The freshman played a clean back nine and tallied a birdie in his final three holes to finish the day at even par.
Â
As a team, Louisiana dropped one spot after a round of 2-over (286) on the final day to finish in a tie with Arkansas State for sixth place at 4-over (856).
Â
ULM held on to win the team title with a 54-hole score of 8-under (844). Host Southern Miss (-4, 848), Mississippi State (E, 852), WKU (E, 852) and Rice (+1, 853) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
"Obviously when you have two freshman finish in the top 15 of the tournament it shows promise for the future, however we needed see more from the rest of the team," Sliman said. "We need to continue to learn and apply from week to week. We didn't capitalize on our core values including finishing out the last six holes strong. We allowed a lot of teams to chase us down in the last six holes, and that's something that we will have to fix if we want to have good showings going forward. I am confident this group can do better in the final six holes next time out."
Â
Ragnar Gardarsson and Triston Elston finished the event tied for 35th overall at 4-over (217). Gardarsson carded his second round of par or better on the final day with a score of 70 (-1) with just one blemish on his card.
Â
Senior Fernando Cruz Valle finished one stroke back of Gardarsson and Elston in a tie for 43rd at 5-over (218) after a round of 71 (E), while Ryan Desormeaux capped the scoring for the Cajuns with a three-round score of 11-over (224) to place in a tie for 68th.
Â
Louisiana returns to action next week as the squad heads to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for The Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove.
