Louisiana Golf In Tenth After First Round Of The Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team opened the first round of The Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove with a score of 9-over par (297) to finish Sunday in tenth place. The 54-hole event is being played at the par-72, 7,368-yard The Grove Club.

"We played on a very demanding golf course, and at this point its still a very tight field," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Really pleased with the way both of the freshmen performed at the top of the lineup for us. Both of them, minus a couple mishaps, could have had rounds of par or better. I'd like to see some of tour guys with experience step up and move us up the leaderboard tomorrow."

Senior Fernando Cruz Valle paced the Cajuns on the first day carding a round of 73 (+1) to finish in a tie for 16th after 18 holes. Cruz Valle registered a bogey-free back nine with two birdies in the final three holes.

Freshmen Jack Tolson and Aron Juliusson are one stroke back of Cruz Valle in a tie for 31st at 2-over (74). Tolson also closed out his round in strong fashion with a clean back nine including two birdies.

"Last week we kind of got slapped in the face with the wet towel in our last six holes, and it was really nice to see Fernando and Jack post strong performances in their last nine holes," Sliman said. "As a team, we had three birdies on hole 18 today and every shot matters when you are playing collegiate golf."

Ragnar Gardarsson and Triston Elston round out the scoring for Louisiana in a tie for 52nd after posting a round of 76 (+4).

Cincinnati leads the tournament with the only score of par or better on the day with an 18-hole score of even par (288). Middle Tennessee (+2, 290), Troy (+4, 292), Ole Miss (+4, 292) and College of Charleston (+4, 292) round out the top 5 teams.

Paul Huber of Cincinnati and Clay Vannoy of Troy are tied for the individual lead after the first day as the pair notched a round of 70 (-2).

The second round of The Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at The Grove is slated to get underway at 7:45 a.m. with play starting off of the first hole. The Cajuns are paired with McNeese for the second round and will tee off starting at 9:24 a.m. Live scoring for the event is available on Golfstat.com.
