Senior honored for second time in his career; currently sixth nationally in rushing
NEW ORLEANS – After rushing for a season-high 223 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday's 28-23 win over South Alabama, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns running back Elijah McGuire was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week in a release by the conference office on Monday.
McGuire, currently ranked sixth among FBS players with 408 yards rushing, recorded his 14th career 100-yard rushing performance and his second 200-yard contest in the Ragin' Cajuns Sun Belt Conference opener. McGuire gained nearly half of his yards in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 68-yard touchdown run that gave Louisiana a 28-17 lead with 7:05 remaining.
The Houma, La., native became the second player in school history to reach the 5,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards, as he moved past Darryl Surgent (4,930 yards) into second place on the school's all-time list. McGuire enters Saturday's game at Tulane needing 212 yards to surpass former Ragin' Cajuns running back Tyrell Fenroy (5,231) as the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards.
The award for McGuire was the second of his career and first since 2014 when he rushed for a career-high 265 yards in a win against Arkansas State.
