Falcons Outlast Ragin' Cajuns in Five Sets

LAFAYETTE – Air Force reversed the script on Louisiana, utilizing a 40-30 edge in kills over the final three sets, to erase a 2-0 deficit and win the closing match on the opening day of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic at Earl K. Long Gym in five sets.
Louisiana (0-5) held a 28-16 edge in kills and hit .436 in opening a 2-0 lead in the match. The Ragin' Cajuns hit .500 and used a 15-5 edge in kills in pulling away for a win in the second set.
In the third set, Air Force (4-1) hit .500 and held a commanding 19-7 advantage in kills to avoid the sweep and begin the rally for the 3-2 (15-25, 12-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-11) win.
The fourth set hung in the balance knotted at 17-all. Back-to-back kills and a Ragin' Cajuns attack error provided the Falcons a three-point edge that held up allowing the visitors to even the match.
Louisiana pulled ahead 7-6 in the fifth stanza after Nia Antoine posted a kill off a Falcons overpass. Air Force followed the hand of Piper Heineck for the next three points as she delivered a pair of kills and a block solo that opened a 9-7 edge.
Chloe Cordell responded with a kill, trimming the Ragin' Cajuns' deficit to 9-8, but the Falcons delivered a decisive 3-0 run which created enough separation to land the set and match.
Louisiana hit a season-best .288 and tallied 58 kills, reaching 50-plus kills for the fourth straight match.
Chanelle Gardner (12 kills) and Stacey Reilly (12 kills) reached double digits in kills for the fifth time in as many matches this season. Gardner hit a team-best .478, increasing her season attack percentage to .421. Reilly scooped a team-best 13 digs to land a double-double for the second straight match and third time this season.
Hanna Rovira topped the Ragin' Cajuns offense with a season-high 15 kills and added 11 digs for her first career double-double.
Elizabeth Pennington's match-high 19 kills led the way for Air Force. Libero Natalie Seitz grabbed match-high honors with 22 digs.
The Sawyer Camillo Classic continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Ragin' Cajuns facing Alabama A&M and concludes at 3 p.m. with Louisiana squaring off against Nicholls State.
