LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team hits the road this weekend for two key Sun Belt Conference matches.
Â
Louisiana (4-5-1, 0-1-1 SBC) faces Georgia Southern (3-5-1, 0-2 SBC) on Friday in a 6 p.m. match at Eagle Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they travel to play Troy (5-4-2, 1-0-1 SBC) in a 1 p.m. match.
Â
Louisiana, which is 1-1 all-time against Georgia Southern, continues to rank among the top 20 in the nation in goals scored, with 23 goals, tying with North Carolina State and Minnesota for 16th.
Â
"All conference games are tough," head coach Scot Wieland said. "We have to play well on the road and that's just what it comes down to."
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns rank 20th in the nation in total points with 65. Senior Mackenzie Higgins is tied for eighth in the nation with eight goals scored, trailing Ashley Hatch of BYU for first with ten goals.
Â
Junior Ashleigh Cade is tied for sixth in the nation in total assists with six, trailing Maryna Clark of IUPUI and Emma Heckendorn of TCU for first with eight assists.
Annika Schmidt scored three goals on the season – two of them coming in the second half of Louisiana's win over SLU – while Haley Boroch, Carly Ellender, Yazmin Montoya, Natalie Newman and Whitney Taggert have scored two goals each.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Cosette Morche and freshman Mackenzie Lee have seen the majority of action in goal for the Ragin' Cajuns with Morche recording 30 saves on the season.
Â
Georgia Southern lost two matches last week, falling to ULM, 2-1, and falling to South Alabama, 5-0. Louisiana won last season's meeting with Georgia Southern, 1-0, in Statesboro, Ga. on Sept. 25, 2015.
Â
"It's pretty simple. I hope we score more than them," Wieland said. "I hope we get one of our first shutouts in conference and it isn't going to be easy."
Troy leads the all-time series against Louisiana, 8-3-1, and has defeated the Cajuns in three of the last four meetings. In the most recent meeting, Troy defeated Louisiana, 1-0, in Lafayette on Oct. 4, 2015.
