Soccer Hosts Texas State In Sun Belt Play

LAFAYETTE - After recording a pair of Sun Belt Conference wins on the road last week, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team returns home for a match against league foe Texas State at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.

The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live statistics and a live video stream will be available at RaginCajuns.com. Louisiana (6-5-1, 2-1-1 SBC) and Texas State (5-5-2, 2-1-1 SBC) are currently tied for third-place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with seven points.

All international students are invited to come and support the Ragin' Cajuns soccer team. The first 100 students to attend will receive a Ragin' Cajuns wristband.

Fans are invited to bring their country's flag to wave throughout the game. In addition, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting books and donations to help build a library in Kenya.

"Coming off two big road wins are huge for confidence," head coach Scot Wieland said. "It gives them a belief in themselves. Right now we are in the middle of conference and those games are over. We are focusing on Friday."

Louisiana, which is 1-3 all-time against Texas State, currently ranks 12th in the nation in total goals scored with 28.

The Cajuns rank 14th in the nation in total points with 80 and 20th in the nation in assists with 24. Junior Ashleigh Cade ranks third in the nation in assists with eight while senior Mackenzie Higgins sits in 14th in the nation in total goals scored with eight.

Senior forward Yazmin Montoya, who was named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week earlier this week, has scored four goals on the season.

"It's a great honor because she got recognized for a really good performance," Wieland said of Montoya. "She has been one of those kids that always shows up and she is a captain and this year she has stepped up and is doing her job."

Senior Annika Schmidt has scored three goals on the season while junior Whitney Taggert added her third goal of the season in Louisiana's 2-0 win over Georgia Southern last week.

Senior Carly Ellender, senior Natalie Newman, and junior Haley Boroch have scored two goals each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cosette Morche and freshman Mackenzie Lee have seen the majority of action in goal for the Ragin' Cajuns with Morche recording 41 saves on the season.

Texas State tied Appalachian State last week, 1-1, and lost at Georgia Southern, 1-0. In last season's match between Texas State and Louisiana, the Bobcats claimed a 4-2 win on Oct. 16, 2015.

 "Right now you can't focus on points or conference position," Wieland said. "You have to focus on the game of the week and Texas State is the game of the week. That is all that we are focused on. You have to play every game your best."
