Cajuns rank fourth nationally in total points scored
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team enters the weekend with two challenging non-conference opponents on the schedule beginning with an in-state battle against McNeese State at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
First kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. Live statistics and a live video stream will be available at RaginCajuns.com.
Louisiana (3-3), which is 7-2-3 all-time against McNeese State (3-1) and has won three straight matches dating back to 2012, continues to rank among the top ten in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 3.17 goals per match. The Cajuns have tallied 19 goals on the season.
"All state games are rivalry games," head coach Scot Wieland said of the Cajuns matchup against the Cowgirls. "I expect nothing less than the performance we had last weekend (against SLU). It's an in-state game, so they are always very competitive."
"I hope we can compete and continue to build confidence," Wieland said. "Our goal is to get better week-by-week to prepare for conference play."
Additionally, the Cajuns rank fourth in the nation in total points with 54 and sixth in assists with 16. Junior Ashleigh Cade ranks second in the nation in total assists with five while senior Mackenzie Higgins sits in fifth with six goals scored.
"She is just enjoying the game," Wieland said of Higgins. "She is free to use her ability as a forward and her speed and aggressiveness. She is having a lot of fun."
Annika Schmidt has scored three goals on the season – two of them coming in the second half of Louisiana's win over SLU – while Haley Boroch, Yazmin Montoya and Carly Ellender have scored two goals each.
Cosette Morche and freshman Mackenzie Lee have seen the majority of action in goal for the Ragin' Cajuns with Morche stopping four shots against SLU to earn her first win of the season.
McNeese (3-1) split a pair of matchups last weekend that included a 6-1 victory at Southern while dropping a 3-0 shutout at UAB.
Junior Savannah LaRicci continues to be an offensive weapon for the Cowgirls with four goals while Bettina Brulhart and junior Kayla Goedicke lead the team with two assists each.
The Ragin' Cajuns will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they travel to face SEC opponent Mississippi State (4-2) on Sunday (Sept. 11) for a 1 p.m. contest. The match can be seen on SEC Network Plus.
