Two-time defending WBI champs to host Louisiana Tech, Houston; will face Notre Dame in Houston

LAFAYETTE - After two consecutive WBI Championships, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team is ready to get the 2016-17 season underway.

Sixteen home games, featuring non-conference contests against Louisiana Tech and Houston, are part of a challenging slate released by head coach Garry Brodhead that includes a Nov. 22 contest against nationally-ranked Notre Dame in Houston.

Louisiana, which tied a school-record with 25 wins last season, opens play at home with an exhibition game at Blackham Coliseum against LSU Alexandria (Nov. 7) before traveling to play the regular season opener at McNeese State (Nov. 12).

The Ragin' Cajuns host Dillard (La.) in an exhibition game (Nov. 19) at Blackham Coliseum before playing Notre Dame (Nov. 22) at the Campbell Center in suburban Aldine, Texas. The game against Notre Dame will feature a matchup between Houston-area natives and former high school teammates Sylvana Okde (Louisiana) and Brianna Turner (Notre Dame).

"When you get to play a top five team in the country right off the bat, it's a big challenge," Brodhead said of Notre Dame. "They have height, great guard play, and Muffet McGraw has done a tremendous job there building that program."

Louisiana travels to play in the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss. (Nov. 25-26) where it will face both Southern Miss and Alcorn State.

The Ragin' Cajuns return home for a game against Xavier (La.) on Dec. 1 at the newly renovated Cajundome.

Louisiana hosts Southern-New Orleans (Dec. 10) before finishing off a three-game homestand against Houston (Dec. 14).

The Ragin' Cajuns wrap up non-conference play at home against Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 19) and Louisiana Tech (Dec. 22).

Louisiana begins a challenging Sun Belt Conference schedule on the road at Little Rock (Dec. 29) and Arkansas State (Dec. 31).

"We feel like the conference is going to be wide open," Brodhead said. "There are a lot of opportunities for us to do really well in conference."
