Louisiana looks to build off opening indoor meet

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Coming off a season-opening performance last week at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team heads west for its second indoor meet of the 2017 season when it competes in the 13-team Aggie Team Invitational on Friday at Gilliam Indoor Stadium.

Action in the first scored meet of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns begins at noon with running finals starting at 1:30 p.m. Louisiana will be joined in the meet by Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Prairie View, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern, ULM and UT Rio Grande Valley. Live results will be available at www.flashresults.com.

"This is the week that we will have most of our big hitters competing," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "We still won't be at our top peak condition, but it will be more indicative of what we're going to be like. I think for the men, it's going to be a good measuring stick because it the only scored meet that we'll have besides (the Sun Belt) conference meet."

Louisiana posted four top-50 national performances in its opening meet last week in Baton Rouge with Taylor Walker ranking 19th nationally in the women's triple jump (39-11 1/4). Tristan Whitehall, who claimed top honors in the men's shot put, is ranked 24th overall (56-6) with Ricky Theyard ranked 30th nationally in the men's triple jump (48-6 1/4) and Meredith Driskell 42nd in the women's pole vault (12-3 1/4).

A quartet of veterans - sprinters Jeryl Brazil and Hanoj Carter, along with multi athletes Franz Beyer and Angus Sinclair - will each make their 2017 indoor debut for the Ragin' Cajuns. Brazil and Carter each finished among the top-50 nationally last season in their respective events while Beyer earned second-team All-SBC honors last year in the indoor heptathlon.

Louisiana posted several top-5 marks among Sun Belt Conference athletes last week with Whitehall and Theyard posting the top marks overall. Walker and Richard Delphin (men's weight throw) each posted the second-best mark among SBC athletes after the first week with Driskell, Tyler Hughes (8.31, 60-meter hurdles), Dylan Heck (9:06.23, men's 3,000-meter run) and Matt Wilson (15-6 1/4, men's pole vault) each ranking in the top-3.

Sprinter Kayla Thompson enters her second meet of the season ranked fourth among SBC athletes in the women's 400-meter dash (25.30) with Stanley Limoh ranked fourth overall in the men's 800-meter run (1:57.40).
