Cajuns Come Up Short At UTA, 79-66

Arlington, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team stormed out to a 39-25 lead at halftime, but were unable to hold on as they fell to UTA, 79-66 at the College Park Center.
 
UTA (12-4, 5-1 SBC) used hot shooting in the second half including 16-for-27 (59.3%) from the floor and 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the three-point line to pull away from the Cajuns.
 
Louisiana (10-5, 4-2 SBC) jumped out to an early 11-5 lead when Jasmine Thomas made a layup with 4:26 left in the first quarter.
 
The Cajuns closed the first period on a 10-4 run to extend their lead to 21-9 at the end of the first frame.
 
Jaylyn Gordon knocked down a three-pointer to give Louisiana a 26-11 lead with 7:55 left in the second quarter. Gordon made another jumper to put the Cajuns in front 36-21 with 2:56 to go in the second period.
 
Louisiana led 39-25 after Gabby Alexander made 1-of-2 free throws with 24 seconds remaining until halftime.
 
UTA opened the second half on a 13-2 run to trim the Cajuns lead to 41-38 when Cierra Johnson connected on a three-pointer with 5:06 left in the third quarter. Johnson scored the final 11 points of the period for the Lady Mavs, which trailed 50-46 at the end of the third frame.
 
Rebekah Van Dijk made two free throws to cut the Louisiana lead to 54-53 with 7:00 to go in the contest.
 
The Lady Mavs took their first lead of the game since 2-0 when Johnson made a layup to give UTA a 58-57 lead with 4:45 remaining in the game. That sparked a 14-2 run by the Lady Mavs that was capped off by an Ericka Mattingly layup to put UTA ahead 70-59 with 57 seconds left in the game.
 
The Cajuns closed the score to 73-66 when Nekia Jones made a three-pointer with 33 seconds left, but the Lady Mavs went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the closing seconds to secure the win.
 
Gordon led Louisiana with 23 points while Thomas had 20 points for the Cajuns.
 
Johnson paved the way for UTA with 24 points while Van Dijk and Crystal Allen had 14 points each for the Lady Mavs.
 
Louisiana will face Texas State in San Marcos, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
