Women's Tennis Opens 2017 Season At Jackson State

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team officially opens its 2017 spring campaign on Sunday when it travels to face Jackson State in a pair of matches on the JSU campus.

Matches are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Coming off an 11-10 season in 2016, Louisiana returns five letterwinners for second-year head coach Stephanie Vallejos. Elena Sava, Kelly Drew, Alexandra Way, Abby Johnson and Carla Ortega are the top returners for the Ragin' Cajuns with a talented freshman class in Lucille Delabarre, India Shiaelis and Marina Garcia looking to build off a successful fall.

"I'm looking forward to watching us compete together," Vallejos said. "For many of our players, it's their first match where they get to play side by side with their teammates all working towards the same goal.

"I know that our returners are excited to get the season started and for our younger members, it will be a great opportunity for them to see why we put such an emphasis on working hard for your teammates."

Delabarre and Shiaelis each won a team-high six matches in singles play during the fall for Louisiana with Garcia and Ortega winning five matches each. Delabarre and Shiaelis each picked up four wins overall in doubles play for the Ragin' Cajuns, including a 3-1 mark as a tandem.

Jackson State returns two letterwinners from a team that finished 10-17 overall in 2016. Louisiana claimed a 6-1 win over the Tigers last season in Lafayette as the Ragin' Cajuns claimed the doubles point before posting wins in five of six singles matches.
