Jeffrey gets win No. 120 to move into second place in school history behind Jerry Simmons

LAFAYETTE – A day after sweeping the doubleheader against Jackson State, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team picked up two more shutout wins against Alcorn State in Sunday's doubleheader at Cajun Courts.

After dropping its first two matches to open the season, Louisiana (5-2) posted a pair of identical 4-0 victories against the Braves to win its fifth straight match while helping head coach Mark Jeffrey move into second place on the school's all-time list in victories.

Jeffrey, in his ninth year as head coach, increased his career record to 120-82, moving past Gary Albertine (119 wins, 1983-88) into second place and behind Jerry Simmons (202, 1973-82).

"I feel like this program has been very competitive," Jeffrey said. "During the past five years, we have been in the top-75 nationally, which inside the top 25-percentof college tennis. I feel my teams have always given their very best and so I am grateful to all of the Cajun players that given their all for me the past eight years."

The Cajuns easily claimed the doubles point, only dropping three games in all of the doubles matches combined. At the No. 3 doubles spot, the team of Coleman Wahlborg and Jamie Fraser got off to an impressive start in their first match as a tandem, earning a 6-0 win against Alcorn State's duo of Ivan Matas and Suyash Gupta.

Louisiana clinched the doubles point when Michael Kritzinger and Vlad Kramarov defeated Alcorn's tandem of Nikita Kostikov and Kert Kilumets, 6-1.

Continuing the success in singles, all of Louisiana's singles victories were in straight sets. Freshman Jamie Fraser got the Cajuns off to a good start at No. 4 with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Gupta. Freshman Elio Lago followed shortly after at No. 5, defeating Nuno Rocha, 6-0, 6-3.

At the No. 6 singles spot, senior Eric Perez clinched the first match for Louisiana, claiming a strong 6-1, 6-0 victory over Matas.

In the second match against Alcorn State, the Cajuns had similar success, not dropping a set in their four singles wins. At the No. 2 spot, Pearse Dolan improved to 3-0 in dual matches for the Cajuns, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nischay Rawal.

Freshman Silvio Cocito-Monoc picked up his second win in as many matches with the Cajuns, claiming a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 4. Kramarov clinched the second win of the day for Louisiana when he defeated Kostikov, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles spot.

Louisiana will return to Cajun Courts on Saturday (Jan. 28) when it plays host to Xavier (La.) for a doubleheader. The first match will begin at 10 a.m., and the second match will follow at 2 p.m. Admission to all Ragin' Cajuns tennis matches is free.
