Johnson/Way pace Louisiana in season-opener
JACKSON, Miss. – Abby Johnson teamed with Alexandra Way for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles before picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chloe Gauvreau-Dredge to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team to a 4-1 win over Jackson State in the season-opener for both teams on Sunday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
Kelly Drew and Carla Ortega each picked up straight-set wins for Louisiana (1-0), which had its earlier match with Jackson State (0-1) canceled due to rain in the area.
"It was a good first day of competition," head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "We had a few delays to start the day, but we managed to come out with good energy and stay focused."
The Ragin' Cajuns claimed the doubles point as Johnson and Way earned a 6-3 win over JSU's Darina Butorina and Tyler Smith at No. 1 with Lucile Delabarre and Drew posting a 6-2 win over Ori Jones and Gauvreau-Dredge.
Drew picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Butorina at No. 4 singles while Ortega defeated Jones, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
Louisiana will return to action on Feb. 3 when it plays host to Southeastern Louisiana in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Cajun Courts.
