Libaud, Fraser combine to go 4-0 on the day as Cajuns win seventh straight
LAFAYETTE – Arthur Libaud and Eric Perez each earned a pair of straight-set victories and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team swept through singles play in earning a pair of identical 4-1 victories over Xavier of New Orleans on Saturday at Cajun Courts.
Vlad Kramarov and Jamie Fraser each picked up straight-set victories in the nightcap for Louisiana (7-2), which extended its win streak to seven matches despite dropping the doubles point in both matches. Xavier, the 2016 NAIA national runner-up and No. 2-ranked team in the country, fell to 0-2.
"That's a team today that will go very close to winning the NAIA Championships," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "I believe they will be either No. 1 or No. 2 nationally, so hats off to them. They have a very strong team this year … definitely the best Xavier team we have faced in eight years."
The Gold Rush took two of three matches in doubles play in the opening match and nearly pulled a sweep in the nightcap before Fraser and Libaud posted a 7-5 win over Pierre Andrieu and Catalin Fifea at No. 3.
After falling behind 1-0 in the nightcap, Louisiana fought back in singles play beginning with Kramarov, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Moses Michael at No. 4. The Ragin' Cajuns took a 2-1 lead in singles play when Libaud posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Antoine Richard at No. 1 before Fraser gave Louisiana a 3-1 lead at No. 5 when he posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Xavier's Tushar Mandlekar.
"Arthur Libaud and Jamie Fraser each went 4-0 today, so I'm really proud of those guys," Jeffrey said. "Arthur is getting better, he is really moving much better."
Perez, who opened the day with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Mandlekar at No. 6, clinched the nightcap for the Ragin' Cajuns when he rallied for a 7-5, 6-4 win over Andrieu at No. 6.
"I thought the guys played some of the best singles matches of the year," Jeffrey said. "We had timely wins on each match to be able to get the point back that we lost in doubles."
In the opening match, Xavier (0-1) clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead after Michael and Richard posted a 6-4 win over Pearse Dolan and Kramarov at No. 1. Xavier claimed the opening match in doubles play as Mandlekar and Karan Salwan claimed a 6-1 win over Perez and Coleman Wahlborg at No. 2, before Fraser and Libaud recorded a 6-3 win over Fifea and Oran Reznick at No. 2.
Louisiana (6-2) began its comeback in singles play as Wahlborg tied the match at 1-1 after claiming a 6-0, 6-2 win over Reznick at No. 4. Libaud followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Fifea at No. 2 before Perez recorded a 6-4, 7-6 win over Mandlekar.
Louisiana clinched the opening match as Dolan rallied from a set down to defeat Richard at No. 1, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
"All in all, it was not a bad day at the office," said Jeffrey, "we look to play a very good Incarnate Word team next Saturday. We will need to improve on some key areas between now and then."
Louisiana will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 4) when it faces Incarnate Word in a 1 p.m. contest at Cajun Courts. Admission to all Ragin' Cajuns tennis matches is free.
