LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team's 2017 season came to a with a 3-2 loss to the Troy Trojans in overtime here at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
The Cajuns record for the season finishes up at 5-10-2 (2-6-2 SBC) while Troy's record improves to 7-9-2 (5-4-0 SBC) and they'll play one more match next weekend before their regular season finishes up.
Senior Rebecca Foley and junior Lexi Turner both scored a goal for the Cajuns with senior Ashleigh Cade assisting on both goals, but it wasn't enough for the Cajuns to finish their season up with a win.
Louisiana entered the match needing a win and an Appalachian State loss to clinch a spot in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. But the Cajuns knew their fate before the match began as App State had won their match against Coastal Carolina, officially knocking the Cajuns out of the conference tournament, as that match ended just as the Cajuns were kicking off.
HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Ryan, making her second start on the weekend, was tested early as she made a save in the seventh minute to get the action of the match underway.
But the Cajuns responded with a flurry of shots, starting in the 11th minute and finishing in the 15th minute. Senior Taylor Kennedy took back-to-back shots in the 11th minute as her first shot was blocked but she stayed with it and nailed the rebound just left of goal.
Cade had a shot of her own in the 12th minute, and Foley sent a header just over the bar in the 15th minute to get the Cajuns going offensively early in the match.
Both keepers traded saves midway through the half, with Ryan snagging one in the 25th minute, and Trojans keeper, Mikki Lewis, got a save of her own in the 26th minute to keep the score at 0-0.
In the 39th minute the Cajuns earned a throw-in and Cade took the ball and did what she does best, sent a long throw into the box. Foley was there to receive it and she headed it down to her feet where she controlled it and poked it into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead near the end of the half.
One last save from Ryan, in the 34rd minute kept the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): Louisiana quickly added to its lead within the first five minutes of the half, when in the 49th minute the Cajuns earned a corner kick and Cade stepped up to send it in.
Her kick flew right over the defense near the far post and Turner was there to head the ball in past the keeper to give the Cajuns a quick second half goal and it extended their lead to 2-0.
The Cajuns got two shots on goal with back-to-back shots from Turner and freshman Una Einarsdottir in the 56th minute as the Cajuns kept the pressure on the Trojans.
But Troy responded and they scored their first goal of that game in the 61st minute on a free kick just outside the box that deflected off the wall and into the goal putting the score at 2-1. Shortly after that the Trojans tied the match in the 76th minute with another goal to put the score at 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining in the match.
Both teams had a few shots down the stretch, with Ryan making a save in the 78th minute to keep the match tied at 2-2 as regulation came to an end.
HOW IT HAPPENED (First Overtime): Troy came out and scored the winning goal within the first minute of overtime to end the match with the score at 3-2 in favor of the Trojans.
NOTEWORTHY: Turner's goal was the first of her career; Foley's goal was the second of her season and it's her first multi-goal season of her career; Cade had two assists in a match for the first time this season and it's the first time since she's recorded two assists in a match since doing it at Troy on Sept. 25, 2016, it also puts her career assists total at 23, which adds to her lead as the Cajuns all-time career assists leader.
