String of 10 unanswered runs, starting in fifth inning, erased a 5-1 deficit
LAFAYETTE – The Red Team grabbed the series lead in the 2017 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball Fall World Series with an 11-8 win in Game 1 on Monday evening at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
A string of 10 unanswered runs, which began in the fifth inning, helped the Red Team erase a 5-1 lead that the White Team had built over the first four innings.
Â
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Team needs one win to capture the series and a steak dinner, while White needs a win to extend the series to a winner-take-all third game on Wednesday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
White built its early advantage off a pair of RBI singles from Hunter Kasuls and Monroe Moll in the first inning and a pair of two-out run scoring singles in the third.
Â
The momentum shifted when Red's Brock Batty entered the contest in the bottom of the fourth. He proceeded to toss 3-2/3 innings of hitless baseball while his teammates dug out of the deficit.
Â
Red's rally started when Hayden Cantrelle's RBI triple into the left field corner in the fifth inning ignited a three-run frame which trimmed the deficit to 5-4.
Â
The lead change came in the seventh inning when the Red Team loaded the bases with no outs and pulled ahead 6-5 after runs scored on a bases-loaded walk by Todd Lott and a double-play ball.
Â
A pair of errors factored into a four-run eighth inning by the Red Team which stretched their lead to 10-5. The White Team made a late push with run-scoring hits from Logan Stoelke (double), Kasuls (double) and Kennon Fontenot (single) in the ninth inning.
Â
KEY CONTRIBUTORS
Cantrelle topped the Red Team's offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Batty faced the minimum and struck out four in his momentum-changing relief appearance.
Â
Both Kasuls and Stoleke had three-hit games for the White side. Stoelke produced three doubles, while Kasuls led the squad with three RBI. Starting pitcher Nick Lee yielded only two hits and struck out five in his three innings of work.
